Web Shield and Firefox and Gabbly Issue

I cannot get Gabbly (internet chat) to run properly under Firefox if Web Shield is running. Pausing Web Shield is not good enough - I have to terminate it. It runs under IE 6 either way. I have the same problem whether or not I am running Firefox 1.5 or 2.0.

I tried customizing the provider to show details. I then entered exceptions for all pages being scanned when I open the chat window. The provider reports no new pages scanned, but still blocks the chat from running properly.

The exact symptom that I have is that the chat window will pop-up and I can type messages that I and others can see, but I cannot see any messages they type and I do not show up in the current members list.

On other possibly interesting bit of info: it doesn’t matter if the proxy is enabled in FireFox or not - the chat data gets “blocked” by the web shield either way.

Can you be more detailed on run properly ?

It is strange that it works with IE with web shield enabled but not firefox. Pausing the web shield basically just stops the scanning but content still goes through the localhost proxy, terminating means it doesn’t use the proxy.

What is your OS ?
Do you use a proxy to connect to the internet ?
What is your firewall ?

Do you use a proxy:

(No proxy with IE.)

Firewall: none
OS: Win XP Pro

Hope this helps … I also find it strange that terminating is the answer, since I have the same behavior whether or not the proxy is enabled in FireFox.

I’m at a lose as to why it would work with IE yet not firefox and if it were the web shield then the problem in theory should effect IE6 also.

By ‘do you use a proxy,’ I was talking about your ISP insisting you use a proxy to connect or you using a proxy for anonymous browsing, not if you had set the avast localhost proxy in the browser.

The fact the it won’t work in firefox with or without the web shield enabled is pointing to an issue with firefox and this chat site, perhaps you should use the firefox bug reporting ‘Report broken web site.’ It isn’t web shield blocking, that isn’t what it does, it monitors and alerts to infection, and when terminated traffic doesn’t even flow through it, it comes direct t your browser. However, if you manually set firefox to use the web shield proxy and port, then terminating it wouldn’t stop firefox routing traffic through the web shield proxy port.

With XP there should be no need to manually set your browser connection to use the web shield proxy.

I also find it strange that terminating is the answer, since I have the same behavior whether or not the proxy is enabled in FireFox.

I’m a little confused as this doesn’t quite match you first comment.

To me that sounds like it works if you terminate web shield.

Has this ever run under firefox, if so was that prior to firefox 2.0 ?
I know you said it doesn’t work with 1.5 or 2.0

Sorry I can’t check out the web site as I don’t use any form of chat program.

Actually, you can test run this program - it is web based and doesn’t require any downloads. Use this URL: gabbly.com/gabbly.com and you will be “gabbing” with users on the gabbly site. I am trying to make this URL work: gabbly.com/conquerclub.com and you can try it too - you don’t have to be a member for the chat to pop up.

CORRECT
The fact the it won't work in firefox with or without the web shield enabled
INCORRECT

As I said, the gabbly chat window works from FireFox IF I terminate web shield. It also works from IE even if I don’t terminate web shield. But, pausing web shield doesn’t help and reconfiguring web shield hasn’t helped so far.

Not positive, but I believe it did run under FireFox 1.5 at one time. Since that time, both Avast and Gabbly have undergone upgrades, but the FireFox 1.5 is still the way it was (which is why I went back and tested this with it).

By 'do you use a proxy,' I was talking about your ISP insisting you use a proxy to connect or you using a proxy for anonymous browsing, not if you had set the avast localhost proxy in the browser.

OK, sorry I didn’t get it - No corporate proxy or firewall. I have several computers at home behind a router. Other than that, no

Well, that explains why it doesn’t matter if I use the localhost proxy or not - LOL.

Hope this clarifies things a bit.

Sorry I can’t check it, it requires JavaScript and JAVA and I don’t have JAVA installed. I also notice that there is no mention of firefox 2.0 (perhaps it isn’t compatible with 2.0 yet) when a pop-up indicates you have to have JavaScript and JAVA enabled in order to use gabby.

I also use the NoScript extension in firefox and see there are a couple of script permissions for zookoda.com and gabby.com, personally I don’t like third party scripts running on pages I visit.

So basically if you want web shield enabled you will have to use IE for this, or terminate web shield if you want to use firefox, if there is no functional difference. Whilst IE6 has some more vulnerability than firefox you would at least have web shield enabled.

OK.

Sure, that’s the work around(s) I already found. I just thought someone here might like to know that the issue exists, since it seems to point to Web Shield doing something besides just scanning files - otherwise terminating it wouldn’t fix the problem.

I honestly can’t see it being web shield or it wouldn’t work with IE, web shield isn’t concerned what browser you use, given that it is one supported by avast (basically all the main ones). It doesn’t act any differently if you are using IE, firefox or opera, etc.

It doesn't act any differently if you are using IE, firefox or opera, etc.

Well, while I really do understand the point you are trying to make, the fact is that it DOES act differently on my machine depending on which browser I use (unless you somehow think I am reporting the facts incorrectly). There is something about the interaction of Web Shield and FireFox that is different than the interaction with Web Shield and IE.

Otherwise, terminating Web Shield wouldn’t make it suddenly start working, right?

Bump …

Just wondering if anyone else had a comment?

My only comment is not a helpful one but is a complete confirmation of your findings.

The Gabbly applet does function correctly in Firefox (2.0) when the avast Webshield is terminated.

The Gabbly applet does not function correctly in Firefox (2.0) when the avast Webshield is active.

The Gabbly applet does function correctly in IE7 when the avast Webshield is active.

I note that this same problem was reported in a French language forum in April 2006, so it not an issue with any recent changes in avast or in the browsers.

I also note that Gabbly itself interferes with the way pages are presented. For example on the CNN home page Gabbly suppresses the main flash advertisement on the page (for both Firefox and IE) - which appears if Gabbly is not involved.

Ok guys, I’ll look at it too. Lukas.
