web shield and livejournal

Reformatted my computer very recently. I had avast before the reformat, and got it again. But now I can no longer get to livejournal. On my work computer, I have no problem.

Now, after some web searching I found that the most likely problem is the web shield on avast. it was advised to go in and change ‘scan all files’ to ‘scan files of specific type only’.
Now, I’ve done so, with the files ADE,ADP,BAS,INF,INS,MDB,MSI,JS,EXE,ZIP,RAR,ASP,ASPX,COM,BAT,PIF,VB,WS,VBE,VBS specified.

But livejournal still wouldn’t work.
So I closed firefox, restarted my computer and tried again.
It still didn’t work
I checked the settings on avast and they had Reverted.

So, how do I get the setting to stay?
my best guess is the problem is the
“2. and files of the following MIME-type” section but I have no idea what to put in there.

I’m especially confused since I had avast for a couple months BEFORE this and never had any trouble with accessing livejournal

Livejournal should be accessed without problems with the default webshield settings.
avast just scans, does not block.
Which is your firewall?
Did you test with another browser?

livejournal won’t load on explorer either.
Only firewall is the standard windows firewall.

edit: it’s not that the page is blocked, but that it stays on waiting for reply indefinitely until saying the connection was reset
this page http://kb.mozillazine.org/Error_loading_websites#Error_loading_some_websites is what led me to suspect that avast could be the problem

Sorry, I have the same problem with a brazilian online banking site.
Never discovered what is up… It’s not avast as it does not work after uninstallation also.
I’m waiting for the next format and install of Windows 7.

Sorry about not being useful. I’m empty.

It’s ok, I’m glad to ahve had someone respond

I tried turning off avg temporarily and that didn’t help either, so I’m probably in the wrong place entirely sighs

Disable is never enough.
avast can’t run side by side with AVG.
AVG Remover can be downloaded here: http://www.avg.com/download-tools

I said avg, but meant avast. it’s pretty late in my time zone

You mean early in the morning
Seems that you haven’t slept this night ;D
