I’m a new avast user, having problems with web shield, when browsing everything works fine for a while, and suddenly when trying to browse to a page its loading until timeout, i use Firefox, but when this happens i try IE & opera and all have the same problem, pausing web shield didn’t help i needed to stop it, and than it worked perfectly fine
(2)when trying to start web shield again it displayed a message “The provider is waiting for a subsystem to start” until i restarted the computer
please help! Thanks in advance!
I run windows vista home premium, comodo firewall pro
Check into the firewall settings, if the following programs should be allowed to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.
Don’t need rights to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service). Although, ashServ.exe sends ping packets to find out if the Internet connection is alive. You can turn this off by checking the “My computer is permanently connected to the Internet” box in the avast Program Settings > Update (Connections) page.
You can ‘remove’ the programs from there and then try to browse again, answer ‘yes’ to the connections requirements from Comodo.
Did you have any other antivirus before avast in this computer?
Did you use Norton Internet Security?
Hello All,
I’m running the latest version of avast pro 4.8-1169 , I’m also experiencing similar problems connecting to the internet with the ’ web shield ’ function enabled. I’m using a laptop with windows vista home premium SP1 installed on it. With web shield enabled, the little blue ball on the taskbar ( notification center ), just keeps spinning, and I never reach my set home page. As soon as I terminate the web shield process, I connect normally. I just use the ’ built-in ’ windows firewall that’s installed in vista. My computer also came with windows defender installed on it, but I haven’t had to touch anything with it. Is there a problem with the web shield feature of the latest avast release ? Am I safe to have the web-shield feature terminated ?
Thanks,
David ???
Well, you’ll lose an important avast feature protection (Internet traffic scanning before any file is saved to your computer). I will be good a little troubleshooting.
Activate logging in WebShield:
Edit \data\avast4.ini file
Find the section [WebScanner]
Add the line:
EnableLogging=1
Restart Web Shield in XP (terminate and start again) or whole PC in case of Win98
Browse (trying to access some webpages)
The log file are \data\log\ashwebsv.log and ashwebsv.ws.
They would be accessible when WebShield is terminated again.
Post them here or send by mail to rypacek (at) asw.cz
After that, disable the logging to avoid a big log file.
Dear Tech,
Thanks for the quick reply, in your reply you mention :
4. Restart Web Shield in XP (terminate and start again) or whole PC in case of Win98
As I stated in my original post, I’m using windows vista home premium sp1, will your instructions work with that operating system also ?
Thanks,
David
Hello All,
Just a quick update…I turned on my desktop computer tonight, and since I have my settings set to automatically download updates ( both program and virus database ) I was notified that a new program version was available ( 4.8-1169 ) I still had the previous version installed. So I went ahead and updated, I re-booted my computer, and much to my amazement…unlike my laptop that has windows vista home premium sp1 on it, I could still access the internet without having to turn off the web shield service like I did on my laptop. I found that rather strange…now I’m wondering if my problem has something to do with windows vista and avast ?
David :
Thanks tech for your help! i checked my firewall everything is just like you said, checked I’m permanent connected to the Internet. but the problem is still happening, it can happen after 10 minutes of browsing or after 2 hours,
my 2nd issue that after disabling web shield it doesn’t start until the next reboot,
i was using Norton mcafee avg kaspersky and avira, i uninstalled it with control panel programs and feathers,
thanks alot hope you’ll help me
Sometimes, McAfee won’t be completely removed if, before, you do not uninstall Avast, including the use of its “Uninstall Application” if necessary (www.avast.com/eng/faq-install-uninstall-avast.html).
After you use Add/Remove you should use Avira Antivir RegistryCleaner as well as the appropiate "Uninstallation Package", both of which can be found at: http://www.avira.com/en/support/support_downloads.html
Run this utility to remove all traces of Kaspersky from the registry:

ICE is a US distributor for Kaspersky.

Hello!
I wish to pay your attention that at attempt to download the harmful program from a site хттп://www.nenaidesh.ru/the Web-shield breaks connection, thereby without allowing to be downloaded completely to a file, but then, through pair seconds, the Standard shield finds out this file in temporary files Internet Explorer -
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content. IE5\VST1XFOV\Book_9436 [1].exe [ASProtect] [Embedded_R#ADMODULEIE] [ASProtect]. In browser Opera_AC too most occurs. It turns out, what the Web-shield not completely breaks connection? It is a bug or and should be?
To other sites of the such does not occur, the Web-shield breaks loading and further everything is all right.
Take, please, it into consideration.
Best regards!
