I’m on an XP SP3 machine with Avast! 8.0.1849 and Comodo Firewall. When I go to do something offline and don’t want the antivirus running in the background, I block all internet traffic and disable all shields in Avast. Later when I’m finished I re-enable my firewall and then re-enable all shields on Avast. All the shields come back except for the web shield, with Avast showing the message “Protection Service Stopped - Please Run The Avast Service First To Activate This Shield”. I looked into my services and only see one Avast service, and it’s already running.
Avast and Comodo get along very well together, I’ve never had an issue before this newest update, so I don’t have an idea why it’s doing this. Any ideas other than not stopping Avast?
Hi Tinman57 welcome to Avast! Forums.
Hmmm… I did a couple tests and I could not reproduce your problem. I blocked my Internet access with my Comodo and disabled all Avast! shields then I enabled everything back and all was well.
Repair Avast! and try again.
Start > Control Panel > Add & Remove programs > select Avast! and click " Change/Remove ". Look for " Repair " and then “next”. Reboot when it is done.
Thanks Iroc, I’ll give that a try and let you know how it worked (or not).
OK. You are welcome. Good luck.
Unfortunately it was the “not”. Ran the repair tool from the uninstaller, rebooted and tried again with the same exact results. Funny thing is if you click on either of the two options it gives, Start It or Recover All (or something like that), it acts like the URL or the icon isn’t responding, not even the default “click” sound. You can hover your mouse over them and they will highlight, just no click action. ???
Bad luck. It did not work.
I can not here any click either. I think it never gives any sound though.
You can try to reinstall Avast! clean and/or make exclusions to Avast!/Comodo just in case something from Comodo is bugging with Avast! web shield.

I added Comodo to the “Trusted” list a long time ago. I never had this problem before until the new update to Avast 8.0.1489.
My main question is why disable avast in the first place? ???
Even when not online avast is still protecting your system.
Since it doesn’t use very much CPU I’d leave it on just in case you run into something you didn’t know was there.
That’s the whole purpose of “resident” protection.
