Web Shield not showing activity

Avast 5.0.396
win xp sp3
Privatefirewall

The Web Shield is supposed to be running but shows absolutely no activity while the Network Shield does - so I’m wondering if the Web Shield is actually working ???

Is there any way to check ?

I have tried disabling the firewall, tried stopping and starting the shields but still nothing.

I’m not bothered about the fact that it is not showing any activity but I want to know if it is actually working…

Everything else works fine.

if it doesn’t show any activity, it may be turned on but it’s not working… weird. What browser are you using ?

@ logos : I’m using k-meleon (and I won’t change !).

@ HA Nut : when I tried to download the eicar.com file the File System Shield blocked it.

If I check the services in Process Hacker these are running :

avast! Antivirus
avast! Mail Scanner
avast! Web Scanner

OK this all confirms what I thought in the first place, you’re running an unsupported browser.
ps: Is K-meleon a Windows version of Konqueror ?

edit: OK I googled it and it’s not, it’s based off of Firefox… strange web shield doesn’t support it…

K-meleon huh ? Maybe this topic can help :

Greetz, Red.

Hello mhf,

I use K-meleon too, my default browser.

just follow the scott’s advise (1st. link by rednose), it will do the trick.
of-course unlike avast4, avast5 use the new ini file, webshield.ini, located under all users profile folder,
for example on my win xp it is at “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5”

2nd. link of rednose, also works, and you don’t have to change the .ini, but it’s slow down KM (at least for me).

HTH

Thanks all for the help - that worked !

I tried the proxy way for now and all’s well - I’ll try the .ini file way later to see what happens. That might be a better solution for me as I sometimes use a proxy for other things (e.g. JonDo) and you can’t run two proxies together can you …

Thanks again !!!
