Web shield not working!

When I start my computer and log on to the internet only 4 shields are running those are 1 standard shield, 2 p2p shield 3 network shield and 4 instant messaging shield but why not the most important shield web shield which says it is waiting for a sub system to start well I am on the internet now and I have tried stopping them all and restarting them that does not work but normally (4.7) 6 out of 7 shields would be working now all I get is 4

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

Left click on the avast ’ a ’ icon and click the Details… button if it is on the displayed pop-up. Now click on the Web Shield provider and if it isn’t running, click Start and answer Yes to the question to persist the changes.

The WebShield is an avast! resident provider and it is not just the corresponding service. If you have WebShield running and stop the “avast! Web Scanner” service, you disable the scanning of the http traffic, but you don’t turn the provider into “stopped” state (rather “waiting for a subsystem to start”). Similarly, if WebShield is stopped, you cannot start it just by starting the “avast! Web Scanner” service.
Are you working with the Windows Service management control?
Is there any other antivirus or security program that could be interfering?

I shut off all providers using the stop all access protection tab so after restarting it it switched to 5 (web shield running) but internet mail seems to never work which it did in version 4.7 at startup no other anti virus but avast but about 2 thousand years ago I had norton but removed it via add remove programmes

Did you try what I suggested about the web shield ?
If so and it worked, try the same option for the Internet Mail provider.

Please run Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista. Boot.
Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.

I don’t see how removing something I have removed already will help why I am saying that it on start up version 4.7 6 out of seven shields running with no problems with version 4.8 4 shields running now nothing has changed on my pc so if norton was there then why would it effect it now

Humour us, if nothing else it eliminates it as a possibility.

lol fair enough ok

Norton Antivirus does not uninstall completely. It leaves behind all sorts of junk that can interfere with other AV products. That’s why there is a separate removal tool. It cleans up all that junk.

What about the suggestion for ashWebSv.exe and asMaiSv.exe, did you try, did it work ?

Right from what I can see avast starts with 4 shields running to make the 5th shield (web shield) work I stopped all the shields using stop on access protection while selecting block all on my firewall then restarted the on access protection while unblocking my firewall which worked for web shield so now I have 5 shields running and 6 as whatever I try the internet mail shield will nor run and I am not the only one having this problem as http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=33098.0 ps sorry about the lack of full stops and commas but it’s one of those days!

I don’t know why you feel the need to ‘stop’ on-access protection to try and ‘start’ something that isn’t started, I don’t see the logic in that.

Don’t stop the on-access protection - Open the on-access protection screen as I mentioned in my first reply and start the Internet Mail and any other providers that aren’t started and you require.

I don’t see any similar issue in the forum topic link you gave, his Internet Mail I suggested to increase the sensitivity not because the Internet Mail wasn’t running, but to increase security.

well he has four shields as do it might not be the same but sure sounds like it to me but I could be wrong. I don’t see why I would feel the need to try and start something that won’t start, so I guess we both are confused as you said yourself and I quote “to try and ‘start’ something that isn’t started, I don’t see the logic in that.” as start and pause are grayed out when a shield is waiting on a sub system to start so what would you like me to do please tell me as what last post was not worded in the nicest terms and to answer your question why do we have a refresh button on a browser if the stop and or back button will do

patrice58, did you try the tool I’ve posted before for full Norton uninstall?

yep I did done and dusted thanks

I have no idea what that means. ???

lol ooooooooooooops ha ha ha ha ha should of said yes I did, all done and dusted.

Does that mean it’s working for you now?

Nope not at all all it means is I have removed Norton from my P.C, same problem remains as well as the painfully slow scanning times by that is being covered in another post.
