I downloaded Free Avast 5.0 but the web shield is off and can’t be turned on. The other components are fine.
Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
I have McAffie security center, and I turned it off.
Turning it off isn’t enough there are low level drivers, etc. that will still be loaded and running.
Having two resident scanners installed is one too many and not recommended as rather than provide twice the protection it can cause conflicts that could leave you more vulnerable.

Sometimes, McAfee won’t be completely removed if, before, you do not uninstall Avast, including the use of its “Uninstall Application” if necessary (www.avast.com/eng/faq-install-uninstall-avast.html).
I removed the McAffie security center and now Avast!Antivirus is working!My system is secured.
