Web Shield Question for Avast 5

I’m a new user and was wondering if it is recommended to set the web scanner to scan all files? It has been mentioned that it can slow down web surfing a bit… ??? Especially since I probably will go Pro here in a day or so and have the sandbox… :o 8)

Try turning Web Shield off for a bit (stay away from unknown sites) and then back on again and see if you notice an annoying slowdown. Hard to tell with all the different computers and websites. Restricting the file mix is just a lesser alternative to turning it off if there are delays. Might also be more noticeable if you have a very fast wideband link.

That is the default setting and one I would recommend, it doesn’t slow my browsing being on dial-up there isn’t much to slow. The internet is currently the point of most infections as sites are hacked at an alarming rate.

There are some that for some reason are reporting apparent slowdowns, though for the greatest majority they see no apparent difference in their browsing/downloading (or this site would be lit up with posts).

I have noticed only the slightest slowdown with the shield, I was just curious. We computer geeks can get spoiled at times with the slightest possible change in speed. Overall I’m quite happy with Avast 5 and will likely go Pro soon…cheers

I have seen some slowdowns reported on Wilders, but these seemed to be mostly from people with very fast (>>10mbps) links and are not something I can check out. Maybe worth Alwil taking a look at whether there is an issue with very fast link rates, but there is not with my 3Mbps link.

There’s no slowdown on my 32 Mbit cable connection.

Try this test: http://www.speedtest.net/. There is a real slowdown but it’s hard to tell in simple web sites download of everyday surf. :o

Well in my 24mb dsl cable connection I really don’t see any slowdown.

For some reason, the speed is slightly faster when I turn on the avast! shields. ???

Don’t know why, but I’m satisfied with this result. ;D

for me the only slowdowns are when downloading large files. browsing there is no difference
