Web Shield seems not to work in Windows 98SE

I wondered why Web Shield in the latest update of Avast! 4.8 is showing a scan count of zero, even though my computer is smoking with the heat of my furious web browsing. Web Shield is enabled but the Ashwebsv.exe process is doing nothing useful. It’s running but what it’s doing is anyone’s guess. The equivalent in Windows XP works fine. I don’t think there is scope for misconfiguration with this module. It simply isn’t working. The Standard Shield is apparently doing its stuff properly.

What do you think?

???

The web shield even fro prior versions of avast hasn’t worked with win98 unless you the user manually setup the browser to use the web shield proxy, see image extract from the avast help file.

Thank you very much. Web Shield is working now.

Do P2P Shield and Instant Messaging need similar tweaking please?

I don’t believe they do (I don’t use either or win98), but in the P2P provider if you click the customize button it will list the P2P applications that are supported. In the list are a number with an asterisk * indicating they need win2k or above to work.

Shortly, they don’t need.
