Web Shield won't start

Hello. I’ve just updated to Avast 7.0.1426 and the web shield won’t work. It is shown as Off and when I try to turn it on, nothing happens. When I go to its tab in Avast interface, i see the message Protection status: Service stopped. from services.msc though is obvious Avast’s service is running, besides, all other shields are working. My system is running WindowsXP SP3, all later updates. Any ideas?

Repair avast!:

  1. Control Panel → Add/Remove programs → avast!
  2. Click on ‘Repair’.
  3. Follow instructions.
  4. Reboot.

Didn’t work. Actually, as a first course of action, I reinstalled in, only forgot to mention it in my original post.

Any other security software installed on the system ? have you tried running vendor removal tools for old AV’s to delet remnants - including avast ? many removal tools can be found here if needed http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

I have Online Armor Free firewall latest version but before I updated Avast I’ve never have had any problems. Also tried your suggestion with the uninstaller for Avast 6, still no result - web shield is a no-go.

  • Which avast!..?? (Free/Pro/IS)

Sorry, it’s Avast Free (and v. 7.0.1426, as already stated).

  1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

Well… that worked for a time. The first time I did the procedure, it was fixed but i decided to wait and see since this whole thing started like that in the first place (it worked, then suddenly stopped). So today, when I turned my pc on, unfortunately Web Shield is once again deactivated with message about service stopped. Weird…

You can try the new beta, if you like.

Yeah, at this point it seems like the only thing left to try. Thanks for the persistence, Asyn.

NP, hope it helps.
