Web Shield

Hey i am new to this virus scanner. Before this scanner i was using bitdefender. I was wondering does avast catch viruses like bitdefender. Because i did the lil test virus scanner file. When i downloaded using bitdefender, bitdefender caught it as soon as i clicked on it, when i was on the website. In order for avast to detect it was for me to right click on it and click scan. Bascially what i’m trying to say does avast standard shield scan inside archieves. Because if it does can you please tell me how to enable it. Also i have web shield enabled it doesn’t seem to be active. I have it on high protection. I downloaded a file and web shield did not even bother to scan it. I am using internet explorer, with a zone alarm firewall. But can someone please address me with the proper answers thanks.

No, it doesn’t - and I’m afraid you cannot enable it in the Home version. You could modify the settings in the Professional version (by editting the redident protection task) - but honestly, scanning archives on-access is not a good idea; it may have a bad effect on your system performance.

What was the format of the file you downloaded, btw?

Some more info about your system would be useful - what operating system do you use? What is the status of the Web Shield provider (in On-Access Scanner control window)?

If you use Zone Alarm chances are that you have disabled the WebShield’s transparent features. Have you answered YES when the compatibility dialog was shown? If this is the case, you might want to consult this FAQ:

If you want to reenable webshield transparent mode (e.g. because you are not using cookie blocking features in ZoneAlarm), edit avast4.ini in \data\log folder and delete the line ZoneAlarmCompatibility=1 from the section [WebScanner]. (and restart Webshield)
