Does anyone know if it’s possible to keep WebRep active (I’m fine with letting it block ad trackers and analytics) while disabling its features that insert icons and popup content into webpages? I don’t need the clutter on my Google searches.
Good afternoon auros,
If you may not be aware that the WebRep/AOS (Avast Online Security) currently have issues as of late. Disabling/uninstalling AOS won’t affect your computer security, because the Avast! Web Shield in the avast program will protect you from web threats and etc. We all have to wait for a permanent fix from the Avast! Team to fix this issue.
As for now, you can disable/uninstall the AOS. If you want to uninstall AOS via add/remove. Do this following! Go to add/remove>right click Avast> Click on change>uncheck browser protection. After that restart.
I’m afraid it is an all or nothing option for the check marks in searches, as there is no user configuration for that in the add-on), the only way to remove them would be to disable the Avast Online Security (AOS) add-on.
That worked for removing it on Windows; on Mac Firefox, I disabled the plugin, though that didn’t entirely uninstall it, and I’m not sure if the background app will eventually try to reactivate it. We’ll see, I guess…
To completely remove it not just disable it in the browser you need to uninstall the Browser Protection module:
- in windows, Control Panel - Add Remove Programs/Program Control > avast - Change Remove/Uninstall - Scroll down and select Change - uncheck the Browser Protection module.
Not sure what the equivalent procedure would be on a mac.
