For quite some time now the avast free WepRep icon on search results sometimes starts working and then stops working again.
I really do appreciate this avast free service but non-icon situation this really is a pain. I have no idea if weprep is in fact installed and working or not. And no, just saying its working with no icon is not enough.
what AV did you use before installing avast?
did you uninstall it before installing avast?
did you run a removal tool to clear any leftover files that may conflict?
I always have used revo-uninstaller but Iorbit seems to may have a good cleanup too! Yes, I took those precautions as a matter of course. I do appreciate the observation! I was using Panda free online.
So any fix you can think for the here and now? And what conflicts can exist on just a geberal detections too versus a real time anti-virus (not to get off the subject though)
I have been looking for a quote like that for “eons”. It is reality >> scan vs real time, been doing it for quite some time on a statement I did not save in my bookmarks (quite some time ago).
Thanks much for the reality statement!!
But how is the WepRep a real time virus detection, given the posts I read (briefly) in this forum. Its not a scan of web pages? Your info will be appreciated.
we do need to get back to the icon notice of being engaged reality though. Right now it happened to show up. A surprise.
I have two systems with clean installs of Chrome v19 (Beta Channel) and Avast AV Pro - Win 7 x64
The Web Rep icon in search results seems to come and go.
No conflicts or other AVs ever installed here.
What I have noticed is when cloud services streaming connection is not present - seems to conincide with times where the WebRep in Search is gone too.
Shrug I dunno if that correlation is relevant or whether it is due to Chrome 19 being Beta, or both.
Hopefully Avast engineers read these forums and can sort it out.
Thanks for the verification of the missing WebRep icon in search results. Icon Not working today again >:( Streaming connections off eh!? I google that just too see. Thanks for the reply.
if ur talking about beside the search results and not at the extensions column of google chrome, yes, i also have the issue of it coming and go as it likes.
nope, i checked it is not linked to cloud services streaming connection (my’s enabled but not connected now but webrep is showing beside search results now)
chrome v18 latest stable.
i will wait till the next minor release of avast to see if the problem is solved. there are some other more significant problems with a few win 32 bit xp systems having driver lock ups with avast driver. (a downloadable temporary fix has been released but they are gonna update the drivers for a permanent fix)
dun bother to try reinstalling avast cleanly or webrep for chrome, i tried it and this minor problem remains.
Part A
Go to a website you enjoy.
Use the Avast WebRep Chrome extension up in the bar to the right of the Omnibox, and give the website a voted rating of your own.
Then the next time you notice WebRep missing from Google search results, try the following:
Part B
Open a new tab.
Go to Google.com
Begin typing the name of the website to which you previously gave a WebRep vote.
Do you now see the Webrep indicator next to search results on that page?
Yes? Ok.
Now without leaving that Google page or tab, go to the top of the search results page and enter any other search term you like - you should still see the WebRep in the results for the new search as well.
It still seems there is an interaction with a connection to streaming updates.
But it also seems possible to sometimes “force” the WebRep to appear by search for a site for which you have already given a WebRep vote.
its okay. i believe that streaming updates only occurs at the instant when there is a fresh update from avast server (i.e. it pushes the update to the client - avast antivirus on ur pc rather than traditional virus updating whereby the client queries the avast server at fixed intervals to see if there is any new virus database)
also both streaming updates and reputation services are related to the cloud. thus it will also connect when an unknown file is downloaded to ur computer to check the details of the file with the servers.
p.s. could someone more experienced confirm this? this is what i remembered reading from the forums.
