webrep problems, can't find answer

Anyone have webrep just top for no apparent reason? I’ve read the post’s non applies to me. No upgrades, no Chrome, no changed setting. no crash’s, NO WEBREP on I.E. 9. never had it in FireFox, Just I.E. Checked tools setting and it check to run? Anyone know why it just stopped working in the past day or so??? and how to replair???

Did you already check “manage add-ons” in the top right menu symbolized with a cog/gear?

Daaaa, did you read my post? Had already checked both I.E. & Avast - both were enabled & installed.

There are a number of recent topics related to this, it appears that there is a problem with the back-end servers for the webrep. The basic indication for this is all Grey bars aon a site that you know has been previously rated, such as the avast site or the avast forums.

David I read those post but either their situation doesn’t fit mine and or no one seems to have a fix! including U, lol. All my setting are correct, I even did a repair from contraol panel, Nothing! Sooooo anyone have a repair/fix?

There’s nothing to fix on your machine. The servers are down.

I don’t use IE9. But in IE8 you have to have at least one toolbar open for avast to be able to display its webrep icon. Why this is the case in IE is something MS have to answer, so if you are running a very minimalist IE9 and no toolbars, I don’t believe it will display the webrep toolbar with icon.

I have the Menu toolbar open in IE8 so I can see the avast WebRep icon, see image, click to expand.

Do you have any toolbars open in IE, if not try displaying the Menu toolbar ?

The above however isn’t a requirement in firefox as it allows just the avast! WebRep icon to be placed almost anywhere (some restrictions), but by default it should be to the left of the awesome bar (a.k.a. address/URL bar).

Actually, I thought I updated to 9 but I didn’t, lol still using 8. But mine doesn’t show an icon for avast, on the toolbar in tool’s drop down menu if I run the mouse over toolbars it shows avast with a check mark next to it, but there is no icon on the toolbar? What I have been noticing though is on several pages I’m getting a pop up for compatible view? and now that I’m looking there is an icon next to the address bar for compatible view that wasn’t their before. Hummmmm! looks like their might be a conflict with avast and MS I.E. from last MS update? :o Also I had gone into Firefox tools and did notice a Webrep setting that was not enabled so I enabled it and same thing as with I.E. - gray.

2nd Asyn reply seem to indicate a server probllem, I’m confused which server? Why would Webrep require a server, unless as I just mentioned it’s a conflict with I.E. and that would not be a down problem.

WR gets the data from its servers. Servers down → no data → WR icon grey.

Who’s server? I.E. is working, I think Avast is too as it’s updating daily? more than likely it’s a compatablity problem with I.E since MS’s I. E. update which Avast tech should be working on if that’s the case instead of having all of us wondering what’s going on.

Avast’s WebRep servers. Also see: Reply #8:wink:

I should have paid attention to your signature (not what you said in the post) as with XP you can’t get IE9.

It isn’t a compatibility thing with IE8 or I would have the same problem, but now you are saying the WebRep is Grey in IE, which means that my comment way back in Reply #3 was correct this is a webrep back-end server issue, so only Grey bars are displayed when you have the icon displayed.

So when the avast! webrep become available you should start to see the coloured bars according the the sites rating.

Thanks David, Guess their working on a fix than 8). BTW I never had an Avast icon in the toolbar or address bar even when it was working just the green bars? only the Avast icon next to the clock. Actually that compatibility tap/pop up is driving me nut’s and not really helping my browser window at all. maybe I’ll contact MS. Sorry if I waste your time, but it did seem by the other post people were pointing to different issue for it not working.

The green (Red, Grey) bars is the avast WebRep icon in your browser.

Well they got the server up but I have another problem, Help! I had to do a system restore to remove the compatability view issue on I.E. after the restore Webrep was fine on I.E. but is now gone from FoxFire. Checked Avast it enabled for both. Can’t find anything in FireFox tools???

Cancel that, I just disabled it in fireFox extensions, had to do it twice it didn’t take the first time, than enabled it and it’s back :-[ But this is weird in extensions I only have 3 - only Webrep and Java quick start was enabled when I disabled Webrep and enabled it again it disabled Java???

Personally I wouldn’t have JAVA Quick Start enabled anyway, I don’t even have it as an add-on in firefox and I have it disabled as a windows startup item. I see absolutely no reason for it at all, since JAVA is only requires for specific sites that use it (and I don’t use many of those, it isn’t the same as javascript).

So why have something running when the frequency of use is minimal.

I agree ;), didn’t even realize it was there until I checked the extensions for Webrep. Thanks for confirming not to enable it :-* But strange that when I disabled Webrep it it was disabled too? Do you think there migth be something attached to it that avast picked up? I did have that Java Virus last year. took me 10 days to find every hiden bit of it, Microsoft helped me find the last remnant in the registry. If so how should I check, avast isn’t showing anything but I do have some files in the chest I haven’t deleted, was told best to just leave them there.?

The question is, do you need Java at all…??
If not, just dump it.

I believe this is more coincidence than connection. I have on occasions disabled the webrep and that hasn’t ever disabled any other add-on. It isn’t so much disabling the JAVA Quick Start (JQS) add-on in firefox as it isn’t needed, but when you install JAVA don’t allow the JQS to integrate with the browser. If it is disabled in the startup items, I don’t know if that would also have an effect on the firefox add-on.

It is also possible that if MS did anything to the main JAVA installation that could have a knock on effect on the firefox add-on being disabled.
