Websheild not working. (win98)

I’ve spent a while looking through the forums for answers before posting, but I’ve run out of steam on trying to solve this issue.

I can’t get websheild to work on any of my browsers (IE, Mozilla, Firefox). I’m running win98SE, Sygate Personal Firewall.

I set up the proxy connection in my internet options for localhost:12080 and I get nothing in all three browsers. I’ve fiddled a bit with the avast4.ini file to try to tweak it, perhaps I have done something wrong in that area. Mozilla and Firefox bring up the ‘no data in this document window’ and IE can’t detect the network connection. Sygate has the websheild application listed, and it is checked to allow connections.

currently I have this setup in the ini file;

[WebScanner]
AutoRedirect=1
HttpRedirectPort=80
LoadIsapiFilters=1
ISAPIFilter1=ashWsFtr.dll
IgnoreAddress=
IgnoreLocalhost=1
OptinProcess=
UpstreamProxyHost=proxy.iprimus.com.au
UpstreamProxyPort=8080

Can anyone give me a hint as to what I can try next with this issue?

I was running privoxy when I first setup avast, but I have uninstalled it to try to concentrate on getting the websheild to work without having the complication of getting privoxy and websheild to work together.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try it without the upstream proxy first just to isolate the problem.

I’m not sure what I have done, but its working now. I did as you suggested and then loaded up a little program I use for making screenshots, as I was going to show the proxy connections in my preferences and the system crashed on me.

To cut a long story short, I just connected to the internet after a reboot, and windows was doing a critical update check and websheild picked that up, the firewall alert came up and I gave websheild the go ahead to connect. Since then its been working like a charm. I have no idea what happened in the meantime, other than changing those settings, then having to reboot a few times because of a screenshot program creating havoc on the system.

I’m going to use it for now without the upstream proxy settings going, just to revel in the moment. :slight_smile:

I’ll get back to you if it starts going wacko after I add the upstream proxy settings.

I think the major issue I as having with this is that the changes to the Avast4.ini file where not being recognised until after a I rebooted the system, so the majority of my fiddling around with the .ini file was just a waste of time. Now that I know that I need to reboot to test it, I have been making more progress. I’ve set it up with Privoxy now, and it all seems to be working well.

Makes sense. The config changes are only reread on the ashWebSv.exe process startup.
To become effective, you can either reboot or at least kill and start this process (directly from the avast foder)
