WebShield with TomCat, IIS.. etc

Hello guys,

Anyone know if webshield have any compatiblity issue with IIS, PWS, TOMCAT, etc for any windows version? Working of course as local host (using port 8080 with tomcat, and the normal port with the others)

May I work normally with this feature of Avast?

(Actually I dont have Avast installed yet, So I asked this first because I was afraid that it could screw up my system, and not allow me to do my Job :frowning: )

Thanks for your time,

Elminster

Sorry my deep ignorance on this… What is IIS, PWS and TOMCAT…?
I can search the web but I think you can give me the answer faster

Hello,

No problem, I will explain with pleasure:

IIS means internet information service

Pws is personal web server

And TomCat is server for Java technology.

All three, are server emulator to web development, and they are used to emulate a server in the local machine so you dont have to keep sending files to the real server to test them.

IIS is for windows xp/2000/etc and PWS for win98, tomcat is for all windows.

IIS and PWS is for asp technology and TOMCAt as I said is for Java. All of them created a virtual server in the local machine, but tomcat access the port 8080 and the IIS and PWS (I guess is the port 80, the one for http, that is used)

I am afraid with webshield, cause I dont know how it will filter the traffic from a local host…

Thanks for your time,

Elminster

I have a local proxy and it works with WebShield.
Step-by-step instructions on how to set up a proxy server: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=12123.msg102656#msg102656

I think you must just add multiply ports on WebShield redirection: 80,8080

Can you see if that will help you? Thanks.

(É chato falar em inglês quando se pode falar em português ;D)

Hello Technical,

Thanks for this link. I am still learning about Avast, so I can decide if I should recommend it to my clients without giving problems with it in the future.
I like what I saw up to now, so I decided to give a try to it in my main computer too, I will just verify if it will works with my local servers… Because I work with it, if my computers stop to work because of it, I guess I die… eheheh

Just one more thing, if webshield is turned off, but the resident protection is on, I will be enough protected while surfing on the net or not?

(Realmente é muito bizarro escrever em inglês para alguém que entende português… risos… As vezes dá vontade de escrever em portugês de uma vez… risos… )

The traffic is: Web > Web Shield > Browser > Standard Shield
All data is first checked and then passed to the browser, and if the data is cached it can be also checked by Standard Shield.
So there is much smaller chance of getting infected by some exploit if the data is scanned before it actually hits the browser itself. In other words, the idea of the web shield is to scan the http stream, to detect any possible virus infection before it has time to get established on the local disk.

Vlk (our guru here) wrote in Wilders forum:
The thing is, a HUGE number of today’s malware takes advantage of various exploits in web browsers (most notably, IE). The same applies to nuisance like dialers, spyware etc. In such a case, howevers, scanning of network streams (http streams in case of Web Scan-ners - i.e. avast’s WebShield or Nod’s IMON) is the only way to prevent the infection. The filesystem based scanner will simply act too late…
