Weird Problem

I have read some threads about a similar problem that I have but none of the solutions worked.

Problem: The blue “i” icon spins like crazy while CPU for process “asvServ.exe” is running 100%

I have reinstalled from scratch twice already. No resolution. There are also the following entries in the event logs:

8/6/2009 3:26:33 PM	SYSTEM	3516	AAVM - scanning error: Aavm: FetchGlobalCounters cannot open mapping - server DOWN???, 00000002.
8/6/2009 6:54:12 PM	SYSTEM	3516	AAVM - scanning error: Aavm: FetchGlobalCounters cannot open mapping - server DOWN???, 00000002.
8/6/2009 11:01:16 PM	SYSTEM	3516	AAVM - scanning error: Aavm: FetchGlobalCounters cannot open mapping - server DOWN???, 00000002.
8/7/2009 4:20:43 PM	SYSTEM	2552	AAVM - scanning error: Aavm: FetchGlobalCounters cannot open mapping - server DOWN???, 00000002.
8/8/2009 9:20:48 AM	SYSTEM	9348	AAVM - scanning error: Aavm: FetchGlobalCounters cannot open mapping - server DOWN???, 00000002.

As soon as one of these errors occur, the “a” icon get’s a little red circle thingy in it and I have to go to services to start the AV again.

The above happens after the screensaver was active for a couple of minutes - and it appears to be triggered by the screen saver as far as I can tell.

OS: Windows XP 32bit SP3 on an Intel Quad Core (Q6700) with 8GB RAM (OS sees only 3.5GB as it’s 32bit).
Avast: 4.8 Home

Any other help accept for the re-install advice (as that doesn’t seems to work) ??

Thanks

Nico

  • Do you use a firewall? Which one?
  • Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system? Did you have in the past?
  • Any other security programs that could interfere?
  • In XP/Vista, is there any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially ‘Errors’?
  • No (Windows FW is Off)
  • No (I only use Avast and I always build my machines from the ground up)
  • Not that I know off. MS does have a lot of updates though so who knows what they push down to a machine?
  • The only errors are the ones I listed above.

Oh - I forgot to mention the RPC error - same as in this thread…

UPDATE: I originally thought it was just happening during the screen saver being active, but not anymore. It appears to be happening every hour or so now.

I find more and more threads on forums about this problem but no resolution. Any ideas?

Thanks

Nico

Temporary Fix:

So thing still dies every now and again. I did yet another re-install. Still the same. So I rebooted in SAFE mode and went to “services”. Then I right click on “Avast! AntiVirus” and select “Properties”. Got o the “Recover” TAB and ensure all the “failure” options is set to “Restart the Service”.

When the recovery is working, you should see the following in your event logs after a while:

Not perfect at all but at least the service continues to run.

Now - does anybody have any answers yet?
