The first time I get Avast to start a scan, it runs the startup memory check and then doesn’t open the program at all.
The second time I try, the program opens, but the option on the menu I clicked (after right-clicking the icon on the toolbar) stays highlighted, frozen on the screen like part of the background, even when I’m shutting the computer down. It’s vanished upon reboot. If that makes sense.
I’m a bit worried about this. Something’s not working properly and I haven’t got a clue what it is. And my technician’s gone to the Caribbean
Can anyone help me out? I’m a bit rubbish at fixing technological stuff. I’m running XP. This has happened since I updated my version of Kerio Personal Firewall, and I wonder if it might be something to do with that.

The only way - for a non-technician - will be uninstall the current version of Kerio, repair your avast installation (Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.), install Kerio again.
Other, simpler, thing to test is just run: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashSimp2.exe
and see what you get…
I have exactly the same thing occuring. It’s not a firewall issue…nothing has changed on my computer to make it suddenly start. It’s a alwil programming issue.
This problem has occured for me too in the past .after uninstalling kerio personal firewall this problem has gone.i’ve done a bit of research on my system and found that
kerio hips driver is causing the problem.i’m now using zonealarm without any problem.
Interesting that a couple of you have had this problem and have put it down to different things. I’m assuming from what anbu says that it is a software conflict between Kerio and Avast but I’m not sure what to do now - I had terrible trouble when I was using Zonealarm with Avast, with blue screens happening every couple of hours and multiple programs not running at all along with the weirdest screen freezes ever where the cursor would move but I couldn’t do anything else - I reinstalled both programs a couple of times and the same stuff went on.
Really not sure what to do, whether to have another go with ZA or use a different antivir, which I’d rather not since I’ve had such a good time with Avast up until now.
