I have been happy with Avast Free for over 18 years and I don’t even have all of the components installed.
There are many things that I consider my personal responsibility, e.g. if you don’t want to lose it then back it up (frequently). To that end I generally do a Minimal install + WiFi.
The “gift” is usually a discount to the paid product.
