Well this is certainly fun....laptop now expensive desk ornament.

Don’t quite understand this. Thought I’d run a complete virus scan yesterday with Avast set on highest sensitivity. End of & it reckoned it’d found a couple recommended ‘move to chest’ & boot scan so let it have it’s way. Now I’ve got an illuminated desk ornament.
It won’t let me open any programs at all even from ‘run as admin’
Avast won’t restart or even open.
I’ve tried safemode without that making any difference.
Control Panel/Programs (etc) shows Avast still there but right clicking for uninstall gets notice program may have been uninstalled. The files in the program folder seem complete.
I’ve tried restore to restore point. Won’t happen. Notice says anti-virus program may be preventing. Tried that in safe mode as well.
My next steps seem to be run ‘Malicious software removal tool’ & if no joy try the ‘system repair’ option but before I do any ideas? I’ve a suspicion that one of those files that were moved to chest were needed. Now, because I can’t even get Avast to run I can’t identify them or restore them.

Laptops a Pentium dual core 64 bit
O/S is W7 Home.
Up until now it’s been running as sweet as.

Connected subject.
I tried ringing the Avast help number. Really bad news. You get through to a service called Iyogi run out of India. I called using Skype because I’m in Spain & our phones won’t call UK 08 numbers. Indiachick wanted remote access to computer so I explain that the machine I’m calling through isn’t the one I’ve the problem with. I can’t put that one online because I’m using a mobile connection & that’s giving me the Skype connection. So she wants to remote the machine I’m using. Thought she wanted to run a helpscreen to aid fixing problem but what she actually did was run a diagnosis on the machine I was using coming up with about 15 problems. Mostly complete b0**0cks; needs defrag which it doesn’t etc etc. Then wants me to credit card to pay for remedy service. This sounds like an absolute con. And by the time I’d rung off she still hadn’t addressed the problem with the other computer.
I’d be interested in knowing if Avast are OKing this bait & switch operation.

Try this and see if it works for you http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=85415.msg692170#msg692170
