Well... um...

Well… first a compliment, then a problem.

 The compliment is, thank you avast! I’m from an internet generation when everything out here used to be free. Free downloads/webspace all over and adware, viruses, none of that was a big threat. I loved surfing through peoples personal homepages and downloading cool stuff. Nowadays, nobody makes homepages because of the annoying ads/pop ups and everything is money money business advertise trojan virus pop up etc.

;D SO, thank you avast for offering this software free of charge for those who are on a low end budget! I’m a new computer technician and I think I may tell all my customers about avast!

:-X Problem is, I just installed avast for the first time on a clean install of Windows XP. Ever since, there seems to be a few problems with the computer. Most consist of hangs and lockups. Especially when trying to install new software. I was wondering, has anybody else experienced a major decrease in system stability after the install of avast? I checked the system logs for errors and nothing out of the ordinary appeared there.

:-\ Since the installation of avast, I’ve experienced lockups while trying to install software. I’ve tried shutting down avast, and I still get the frozen computer while installing software. Last night, I let avast run to do a full system scan and when I got up in the morning, the program had crashed and I was prompted to send an error report to microsoft.

??? This is a clean installation so it’s unlikely there is another program conflicting with avast. There’s no other antivirus installed on this computer. Uninstall/reinstall didn’t solve anything.

 Anybody else have this problem?

Specs.
WinXP Home w/ service pack 2
direct x 9.0c
AMD athlon 2200 1.79 ghz
256 ram
geforce mx 4000 64mb
80 gig hdd etc etc etc

Which new software?
When I install Windows XP, avast is the first after the MS Updates. No troubles… I’m lucky ;D

What do you call stability? Freezes? Crashing?

Which program crashed? avast?
Please check the folder \data\log
Are there any files called unpXXXX there (where XXXX is a random number)?
If so, send them to vlk@avast.com
They may contain more information about the problem (maybe a link to this thread).

Yes, I’ve posted a few times about minor problems with 32 bit Windows XP Home and more serious problems with 64 bit Windows XP Pro. In my experience there is something causing writes to disk to hang. This includes, for me, even simply making a new desktop folder in addition to installing any and all software and Windows Updates.

This does not affect me on every installation but on those where it has I have not been able to identify the cause or find any real solution. I have emailed one of the Alwil team about the problem because I suspect it will be cropping up more often.

EDIT: Usually, for me, stopping all avast providers (not just pausing them) allows software to be installed.

System instability would include both crashes and hangs. As for what software I’m installing, it doesn’t matter. ANY software. I tried to install aim, and the computer froze. Adobe reader, computer froze. It was a clean install. I had installed XP, the updates, and then avast.

Then when I tried to scan my system for viruses, avast itself totally crashed.
Avast seems to be a nice little program. I checked the avast folder for logs and found none.

Hmm. I guess I’ll tinker around with it a bit more. Considering the cost of this program, I’m actually pretty impressed. I just need to figure out a few of this little quirks.

Right click the “a” ball, select avast! log viewer.

Sorry guys I’ll probably get wacked for this but!!

Running Windows XP SP2 with 256megs of ram is really pushing it. I wouldn’t consider an XP install/system
build without at the absolute minimum of 512meg of ram and I think that is pushing it.
XP is resource hungry with all its services running throw an AV program into the mix, its a bit like a dog trying to pull a Tank up a hill. Its not going to happen. Add some ram watch your problems stop.
I’ve been using Avast for a couple of years now without any of the problems you have described.

256MB of RAM may not be very much, but it shouldn’t cause the described behavior.
If you say the computer freeze - how exactly does the freeze look like? Is the mouse pointer frozen as well?

The computers I’ve experienced this on were a dual core Pentium with 2 gig ram and two dual core Pentiums with 1 gig ram (all with 64 bit Windows) and to a lesser degree on a Pentium 4 32 bit Windows machine with 1 gig ram.

So I think you’re right that’s its not the memory.

256 ram should be sufficient to run XP. In fact, with a manually adjusted page file, you could run xp on as little as 64 megs. Slow, but operable. As for freezing, well for the MOST part, I’m talking about complete system lock ups. In otherwords, not even cursor movement. I have my A+ certs so I know a bit about computers. I just lack the overall experience. But I did check the system logs in the administrative tools, page file, memory usage, and everything seems in the OK. No logs in avast log viewer except for an update. hmmmm. I have been running the computer today and everything seems in the clear all of a sudden. I’ve installed Macromedia flash player and shockwave and they seemed to install ok. I havent’ had any system lock ups yet today either.

Are you writing to the page file alot with your current set up?

For such kind of freezing, my bet would be on a hardware problem. Please check

  1. the cooling of your system (CPU, graphics adapter, memory modules)
  2. the memory modules themselves, e.g. using MemTest

An antivirus, specifically its resident protection, increases the workload of the computer (because of the additional background scanning), so previously hidden hardware problems might manifest.
