Welp! Thanks for nothing Avast!

My server was hit with Ransome software even though all your shields where running. now I’ve lost everything. Guess I’ll have to reinstall the OS, and cut my losses, all 100 TB’s of loses.

Good work! >:(

You know what? The more I think about this, the more angry I get! You charge me almost a hundred dollars for your security and it didn’t work! WTF! I’m really upset with your company right now. There is a shield specifically geared towards this type of hack and it failed. What a disappointment.

There is no 100% The virus (infection) always comes first and the protection always comes afterwards.
Someone is always first to run into something brand new and when that happens, they get infected.
This is the main reason why one should, on a regular basis, create image backups.

In other words , you , the customer, pay the money, and we, the company, assume no liability…
This has to be a wonderful way of doing business…

That’s the way it’s always been with all companies.

Hi, the consumer version doesn’t support any server OS.
Which Avast version and server OS are we talking about…?

Regardless of the version used, it wouldn’t change the outcome or the answer.

I’ve been interested in and used many different “Security Software Programs” and the internet over many many years and have yet to find ONE (1) Anti-Virus (malware program) that claims 100% guarantee from infection.
It is an impossible Reality…!

Not really, see here: Comodo Internet Security Complete 4.0 Backs Best Virus Protection Claim With $500 Guarantee

https://www.comodo.com/resources/home/newsletters/jun-10/technical-news.php

Maybe you need to learn to read. Where does it say that it offers 100% protection ???

What Comodo does say is , if we cannot protect you, we will offer $500 in compensation for the damage produced by the lack of protection
What do you say is, if Avast cannot protect you, well…that it, suck it up!

What I said that you can’t rely on simply your AV. You need to always have a backup ready in case your AV fails or, your HD etc. crashes.
Your computer, your choice. Comodo will certainly never be my choice. :frowning:

My apologies, when I say server, I miss spoke. Although a do have a “server-like” application running, to allow me access to my media when I am at work, or from my phone, the computer in question is not really a server.

I should also mention that although I did have ports facing the internet to access my media, these libraries where behind some heavy encryption. The computer in question, didn’t have any RDP ports open. The probken here is that the Ransomware encrypted over 100 TB of DVR and ripped blurays files and at no time did Avast even catch that 100 TB of information was being changed all at once. Blah!!!

I don’t expect avast to be perfect, but it was 100TB of information being changed consecutively, that isn’t a red flag to avast???

That type of Ransomware isn’t cutting edge.

Infact, the application itself even altered system files so in reboot I lost my ability to access windows altogether. But the hackers made sure to leave “Readme” files all over my drives, so when I looked at the encrypted files I still knew how to send them Bitcoin.

So, yeah, I’m still a little angry about the whole thing.

WOW! Obviously their advertisement is bordering on false when it says:

Hackers demand an average of $643 from ransomware victims. Ransomware Shield keeps your most important files from being encrypted and held hostage, and lets only trusted apps alter them in any way.

How in the world did Avast not detect 100TB to be encrypted. On my renewal date this will make a difference for me whether to renew or not especially since it looks like Avast increased the price from my last renewal.

How in the world did Avast not detect 100TB to be encrypted.
Was ransomwareshield correctly set up?

Ransomware Shield - FAQs >> https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/Antivirus-Ransomware-Shield-FAQ

I have my Ransom Shield always set on ‘Strict’ and have had no problems.
One would have to see specific OS details and events analysis to confirm Avast was at issue.
Don’t know :-\

Ultimately, prevention starts at home with regular image backups.

If you would have have ONE RANSOMWARE PROBLEM while using Avast!, probably you will not have been here anymore…

Usually people do not have TWO ransomware problems in their life.

You’re correct. Many people prepare for a disaster before it actually happens.

We get it you have made that point multiple times in this thread, but prevention is not what this thread is about. 100TB of media content encrypted with Avast’s Ransom Ware shield active in addition to encrypting Windows OS files that prevented a proper start up. The backup card is always being played after a disaster or failure and it should be part of regular maintenance and upkeep. But how do you handle 100TB of lost content with some of it being unique.

I feel for the OP and he seems to be savvy enough to handle his setup, that he had paid for Avast Premium and used it for some time tells you that he was not a Newb but actually aware of how to do online business.
