I do not try to scare anyone, no way. It is I just like to hand down the facts as we find them. I do not believe in security through obscurity, the facts should be there however scary they may sometimes seem. Some scaring I learnt from you see attachment.

Thankfully WEP is being superceeded by WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) as the WiFi security. Unfortunately your WiFi router/equipment might have to be updated to support it.

It is quite secure if you use WPA-PSK with AES encryption and a long encryption key with a mix of numbers, lower and upper case letters.

Absolutely correct DukeNukem, unfortunately your average user out there doesn’t know that and in this case ignorance isn’t bliss but potential trouble.

On the old WEP standard when it first came on the scene many users didn’t touch the default setting that came with the equipment and I don’t think that will have changed with the new WPA enabled equipment. There are still many users broadcasting their presence with no restriction as to who can jump on their Wi-Fi bandwagon and bandwidth.

Like many security issues, the user is often the weakest link; this is largely through a lack of education on the means of what they should do to set-up their equipment or in some cases not even reading the manual ;D
