Werid virus on my computer...

This happened last night but I finally took some action this morning. Basically, last night, every search engine I used lead to phishing sites even though the result said it was the real site. I’ll give and example

Google Search: Wikipedia

Thats what it looked like. At first I thought maybe the Y2K bug was 9 years late (or something to that extent, not really what I thought =p). But then some other werid things started happening. First off, all my program files were deleted. Going to Start > All Programs would just show a box saying [empty]. Then, while logging to World of Warcraft, I couldn’t log on because it said I was missing some files. After trying again and again, it got worse to the point that the character select screen couldnt load up because the models were missing.

I thought something was eating my computer so I did a boot-time scan. But after all that, nothing was detected. So after that, I used Spybot S-D (and looking around here it seems thats not the best idea?) and did a scan. Maybe halfway through the scan, I get a popup from avast saying that a suspicious file was found. I can’t remember the name of it, but doing some research, it is a 98/ME sound driver so I thought deleting it wouldnt do much harm. mdsaud.sys I think it was called. After that, it still said I had suspicious files on my computer and asked me to a boot-time scan. I just ignored it thinking that avast is just going crazy. But the search engine problem came back. Now, I am on my mothers laptop typing this message while my computer is doing yet another boot-time scan.

So if someone could please tell me what I should do would be very helpful. My computer has been pretty virus’ free up to this point and I have been taking very good care of it.

Sorry for double posting but I found the solution here on the site :D.

Anyways, I probably should have searched before posting but I like to get post while the words are still in my mind ::slight_smile:

However, I’d really like to know about those other things like the All Programs dispearring and the WoW files slowly fading away but then being resolved by a restart.

Yes there is a wealth of information on the forums for those who look ;D but you did find it.

As for the other issues, I would suggest some other tools to check things out.
If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode and report the findings (it should product a log file).

  1. SUPERantispyware On-Demand only in free version.
  2. MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, On-Demand only in free version http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/malwarebytes/mbam-setup.exe, right click on the link and select Save As or Save File (As depending on your browser), save it to a location where you can find it easily later.

Welcome to the forums.
