I recently installed Avast, and I bought cleanup to go with it because… well, because I am a sucker, and my scan had red items in it if I didn’t run cleanup.
So I bought and ran cleanup, and it told me that I had 4 “unnecessary apps” (as well as some “junk files”).
Nowhere could I find any reference to what these unwanted apps and files were, there is no link in the relevant Smart Scan screen to get further information. That being the case, I foolishly assumed that Avast must be really sure that those apps & files were useless. And, because I’m a sucker remember, I clicked on the “Resolve” button.
Well, that was a really dumb move. When I later restarted my PC, I found that I could no longer access the Internet, through either wired or wireless networks.
Not only that, but my CPU was running constantly at 100%, in what appeared to be a fight to the death between Avast and “Service Host: Network Services”.
Not only that, but I couldn’t uninstall Avast.
After wasting half a day trying to fix my PC, I finally managed to get things working by going back to a restore point just before Avast Cleanup completely fscked up my system.
So, two questions:
1: how do I find out what the “unnecessary apps” and “junk files” Cleanup is saving me from are?
2: How do I get a refund for this piece of shit software?
I cannot see any “details” to click on - I have already tried clicking just about every part of the screen, but none of it actually gives me any more information.
I tried to attach it to my message, but when I click on the “insert image” button it just puts img tags in the text of my post, but doesn’t give me anywhere to upload to.
The CleanUp link is just a tooltip that tells you what CleanUp is. The only real option on this screen is either to resolve the issue (i.e. remove the applications) or to skip.
I certainly hope I’ve got it installed, otherwise I’m not sure what I paid £17 for just so that I could use this “free trial” software.
I don’t have a control panel > software > avast > change
The closest I have is settings > apps & features > avast > uninstall - but although I’m tempted, I don’t want to do that quite yet.
I’ve attached a screenshot from Avast Premier > Settings > Tools which shows that Cleanup is turned on. Is it possible to have it turned on but not installed?
…it doesn’t show in the menu of the avast UI though, although the menu isn’t actually a menu, just a button that opens a different toolbar. On that toolbar are “Scan”, “Tools”, “Passwords” and “Store”.
Please go to Scan → Scan for Performance Issues. This runs the same scan as the smart scan does concerning Cleanup. The naming is somewhat confusing I agree.
Once the scan is done (should take about 1-2 minutes depending in internet connection) you will see a results screen and under the number of issues found a “details” link. Once clicked, it opens up and shows all the details of the issues found.
Also, we will be adding the same link to the smart scan screen within about 1-2 months.
