Not very funny with an unprotected PC don’t you think?
Didn’t it just tell you that it will expire in 21 days?
Normally, the user is notified about expiration 3 weeks in advance (and then every day).

I don’t remember to be honest. I was in a state of shock when avast told me it stopped protecting my PC. I will check it next year… Thanks for your quick reply!
It doesn’t leave you in the lurch and stop protecting you, but you won’t be able to get updates until you re-register and enter the new key, assuming you have exceeded the usual notification period mentioned by Vlk.
Complete the avast! 4 Home Registration form and you will receive an email from register @ avast.com (without the spaces) with your registration key. Insert Registration Key - Video
How often do you need to reactivate it? (home edition)
Every 14 months.
Check the about avast for the Updates Expiration date.

Edit: I guess I simply have to change the system time to see it.
No need to post a screen shot if the cause was an incorrect system date.
