What do I need Google Play for?

Hi everybody,

I would like to download Avast Mobile Security on my Motorola Android phone.
After clicking on install I am directed to Google Play. What for?
Then I get the following response: “You did not activate the Google Store App (symbol with white shopping bag) with this E-Mail-Account.”
I just would like to download avast but not any Google App?
Moreover what do I need a shopping basket for? I thought Avast Mobile is free?

Has anybody got an idea what this is all about?

Many thanks,

Hello,

you can only download avast! Mobile Security from Google Play or Amazon Appstore.
Google Play is the marketplace app Google uses to distribute and sell apps.

If you haven’t updated your phones Android version you probably still have “Android Market” installed. It’s the predecessor of Google Play.

Hi,

you can download AMS from Opera Apps for example - apps.opera.com/en/avast_mobile_security.html

Many thanks for your answers,

I would like to close this post, since I found help myself by asking Wikipedia what Google Play is needed for. I found the icon under the former name “Market” in settings and guess what - I downloaded Avast Mobile Security successfully!

Yeah ;D
