Was exploring avast! and came across the following: [kernel32.dll, winsock.dll, wsock32.dll], are these files supposed to be in the virus chest?
And I also found a trojan file that was in system restore that I thought I deleted and eicar virus test. Is it safe to delete these from the virus chest or should I leave them alone in the safety of the virus chest? Thanks.
From avast’s help file (which you should have already read anyway)
Backup of the system files. During the installation, avast! copies some critical system files into the Chest, under the "System files" category. Those files might cause the operating system to crash if they get infected by a virus. If needed, those files can be restored from the Chest to their original location. Should an unknown virus infect the computer despite the extensive protection from the avast! antivirus package and alter an important system file, it can then be easily restored to its original state.
So the answer is: Yes, those files should be in your virus chest.
About the deleted viruses, viruses found in System Restore cannot be directly deleted, you have to disable system restore, reboot the PC and re-enable it (if you want), so that everything in the system restore folder gets deleted (along with the viruses). There is no other way.
avast’s Chest has different sections to it and you will see that these files are in the System Files section (for back-up purposes) and not the Infected Files section where infected files are sent when you choose ‘Move to Chest.’
