What does activate in AVAST do?

I see ACTIVATE on my screen and I read about ACTIVATE, but I cannot find what activate does? I think the AVAST programs work without being activated so what does it do?

Are you using the Free or a paid version of Avast ? What version of Avast is installed ??

Activate allows you to upgrade the version of Avast you’re using.

I think you mean update the program and VPS.
