I noticed that update notification icon which appears when avast is checking for updates, but this time it never went away. It just stayed in traybar.
I terminated all processes of avast! and restarted it and now it seems to be fine.
I also checked the log and found entry in Warning section:
20.3.2005 9:40:08 RejZoR 1792 Function setifaceUpdatePackages() has failed. Return code is 0x00000005, dwRes is 00000005.
Now i see it’s update related, time stamp is correct for the error, but i want to know why that happened.
I have been having a similar error when trying to update. The update icon will appear in the taskbar and if start update manually then the update will hang when downloading initial file (server.stamp etc.). Only way to kill the update is by taskman and ending avast.setup
Have not checked log file yet but will look and post here.

I don’t think it matters if there is an update available, if the attempted update fails, this is put into the logs.
I had the same entries when my firewall was once blocking the updates, avast doesn’t know why the connection failed, it just records it in this way. Perhaps I’m wrong (happens more as I get older ;D), but if this is the case, then perhaps a more user friendly/informative message would be better.
