and u?
Why don’t you like the VRDB?
Do you know what it is for and how it is used?
What I don’t like… Tough one…
Ah I know something.
The help/manual is not always in the same language that the application itself is in.
i know what VRDB is , i did a try on a old pc
ran some virus , ran avast , it was not able to cure the files
That doesn’t really follow, something that you don’t like, but it’s great!
The VRDB isn’t a virus cleaner, in the sense that it can’t clean all virus infections on all files.
Extract from avast! help file:
VRDB PRINCIPLEavast! creates an integrity database, i.e. it stores information about the actual state of the files, doing it three versions back for each file. The database creation/maintenance is performed either when the computer is idle, or when the screen-saver is running (any screen-saver, not only the avast! one). This database, once it is created, is updated each three weeks (this value may be changed by editing avast4.ini).
If any file is infected by a virus, it is possible to repair it, i.e. turn it to its original state. If there are multiple versions of the file in the database, you can choose which version you want to restore.
However, it doesn’t do this for every file on your system, generally only for system files, .exe, .dll, etc. You also have to have run it before infection in order for it to be able to repair those files that it monitors.
What do I not like hard pressed to pin down anything that I don’t really like. I keep thinking back to what AVs I had before avast!
Like David said, just executables could be cleaned.
So, we need translators… Help files is very huge to be translated, takes a lot of time… Maybe you can help with some of them (as far I know you speak at least 4 languages, don’t you?).
What I don’t like?
Well, submission, analysis and detection of viruses and false positives could be better and faster 8)
yes
i know i would only like to know what u don’t like about avast
Tech , i know i know, did u try to make a test?? maybe on a old pc?
I’ve installed avast in an old laptop (386) running Windows 95.
But I never had to use VRDB there as I never got an infection there.
I just found some ‘bugs’ into avast for Windows 95, reported to Igor and they were corrected 8)
But I never had to use VRDB there as I never got an infection there.
That’s the reason I like everything in avast! But… The direct link to Virus Chest could be added into a ball menu.
Fully agree 8)
Better, in my opinion, will be a cascade menu (like winzip or winrar) where we can scan the file or folder, send to Chest, add to ignore list, etc. 8)
Context Menu is very easy and I think it’s a good improvement on avast!
But, like Mantra asked to post what we don’t like and not our wishes…
I agree 100% with Tech
Plus i also agree with Tech on this Well, submission, analysis and detection of viruses and false positives could be better and faster
Cheers crofty59 8)
There is only one thing i don’t like about avast,
and that is the CPU usage.
ashServ.exe
often use about 80% of the CPU.
I know, there’s a lot of post’s about this problem but no solution.
Wonder if this is a bug that avast tech don’t know how to fix ???
Hello,
Avast! is a great product and I can honnestly say,…I never ever had a real conflict and/or problem.
The only thing that is bothering me,…is the fact that the GUI is kinda weird.
e.g => the control panel to setup the resident scanner ect ect,…is totally different from the AV itself. I know I know,…you can have skins,…but these are only for the AV console,…and not for the control panel,… skins are cool,…for those who care,…honnestly I don’t,…but I don’t mind this extra option,…
It would be nicer if the whole interface would have the same lay-out ect,… and not a mix of different styles,…cause imho it is kinda sloppy and unpro,…
To be honest,…i hardly open these panels,…and frankly I only want the software to work and do its job,…so I rather want that Alwil put their energy in the AV dev.
Please don’t flame me,…cause I know this topic is a bit sensitive,…
I just say my opinion bout this one
There is only one thing i don’t like about avast, and that is the CPU usage often use about 80% of the CPU.
Wow! You have a problem… It should NOT be this way…
It could take the CPU up to this level (or higher) a few seconds, to scan a huge file, but OFTEN ? :
There is only one thing i don’t like about avast,

As you are probably aware the ashServ.exe is the main scanning engine and it has a High Priority rating in windows XP, if it didn’t have a High rating it would have to fight with other programs with a Normal or Above Normal. This isn’t a good idea for an AV otherwise a virus could get established making it much more difficult to remove, but it should hand back to other programs once the scan is complete and at High Priority that is likely to happen quickly.
Are you saying this doesn’t happen?
Or that there is a noticeable pause?
As Tech implies, what are you doing at the time?
The only problem I find, is that programs take longer to open then with other AVs.
I've installed avast in an old laptop (386) running Windows 95. But I never had to use VRDB there as I never got an infection there.
to me too , never got an infection
but i wanted to do a test, Build a new database , shut down avast , ran 2 virus , nothing avast was not able to cure!
i tried to cure system files , but nothing!
this is sad , because the others avs are able to clean almost every infection
I do not like that avast is too easy to shutdown, no GUI for imort of new settings. Command line scanner cannot be protected with password. To bad seflsecurity. Need msvcr*.dll has no own.
Now it also comes rootkits, and spywares…
No menu to chose of configuration kind during installation as:
Silent (no popups, autocure)
Advanced (popups on action)
But I like that it is staible, easy to use, nice feature sets, can be used to complete secure computer with blockering of file operations. Screen saver is one of best but interrupting when virus found. Command line scanner is usefull in complex cases.
Good alert methods.
Am I wrong somewhere?
