What Happened to the other Ball?

I installed avast a couple of weeks ago and am very happy with it. After I did the installation there were 2 of the rotating balls in the tray. One with an A and I believe the other one had an I on it. I remember the instructions said that you could combine the balls into one…but I didn’t do this …I wanted to keep them separate. I noticed this morning that only the rotating ball with the A on it is in the tray. Seems the other one disappeared.

So…the question is: Where did the other ball go and how can I reinstall it? I believe this is the one that does the back up every so often for files and gives the ability to restore them in case needed.

Can anyone give some advice on this?

Thanks,

Chuck D

Try right clicking the “A” ball, mouse over “VRDB”, then click on “Split the two icons.”

If this is not possible, then please post again.

If what Charley said does not solve, for the ‘i’ icon (VRDB): http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=14356.msg121337#msg121337
Check your avast4.ini file settings. Click ‘Settings’ in my signature and browse for the VRDB section.

[VRDB]
MergeIcons=0
Disabled=0
ShowTaskbarIcon=1

Thanks for the help guys. The VRDB Ball is back up and running. I went to install/uninstall programs and did the repair function for avast and rebooted my computer. After rebooting the Icon was back in the tray.

I first tried right clicking on the A Ball…but found no reference to the VRBD.

Hi Chuck - glad you got it fixed. Actually, the repair feature was to be my second suggestion but, since you were still logged in at the time of my posting, I thought I would wait to see. Guess I should have included that with my first post. Oh, well, the important thing is that you now have both “balls” again. ;D :slight_smile:

Please come back often, learn more, and maybe help others. :slight_smile:

It seems that many people have this problem considering the various entries around the “i” ball disappearance.

Looks to me as a BUG :frowning: of the updating program, the avast4.ini file is not consistent with the program setting after update, it shouldn’t happen.

The bug is minor, but rather disturbing to the home user.

How can this be fedback to the programmers ?

What do you mean? What is set into your avast4.ini file?
Did you compare to the settings posted in avast4.ini file thread? (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=1647)

@ girviere
If it were truly a bug then it wouldn’t be just a few with this problem but a veritable flood of posts on the forums. If you edit the avast4.ini as suggested then it should be entirely consistent with the program setting to display the ‘i’ VRDB icon on the system tray and not have them merged.
If not what are these inconsistencies that you mention ?

The problem is how can it be replicated, if it can’t be replicated it is very difficult to find a cause.

There are two avast icons, why one should display and not the other is weird.

There have been occurrences of anti-spyware applications killing the ashDisp.exe, avast ‘a’ icon so it may be possible that something similar is happening here but that is entirely speculation on my part as an avast user.
