I have downloaded a program called FanControl, which upon launch was flagged to have “vulnerable kernel drivers” and blocked by Avast. But the program was left running and interactable, does it pose a risk or did Avast just block a portion of the program that was unsafe ? Any action I need to take, such as to remove that driver ? I don’t even know what the driver is called.
Hello Snowhearth, welcome to the community.
As the driver needed for something is blocked, considering it’s a fan control app, some (or maybe all) functions of the app won’t work. That means, for example, if you adjust your fan speed, nothing will happen. I don’t think any risk is there as long as the driver is blocked, so further action is not needed.
I run FanControl and have disabled vulnerable kernel driver blocking. Otherwise certain information from my motherboard isn’t available because the driver that interacts with those chips is blocked.
Avast really needs an expert mode or something that lets people selectively allow drivers, without an all or nothing approach. Same with for instance URL:Mal popups. No way to whitelist on ‘threat’-type.
Thank you for the answer, that puts my mind to rest
