What host file tool do you use?

Hi malware fighters,

Do you use a host file tool and what one: a list here: http://mozeskriebel.com/download.php?list.41

I used to have spybot add entries for me, but I work on so many computers, it’s easier to just download one from the web instead of installing spybot on every computer and running the immunizations.

I have used Hostess for years along with Spybot.

Hi Polonus,
thanks for that link; I haven’t used a hostsfile utility for years, and I couldn’t remember the name of the one I used, and guess what, I see it now in your list: “hostsman”. Will download it again I think

edit: up and running

Hi,

I currently use hpHosts, and MVPS. With a very light utility called HostsMan.

+1

Spybot S&D’s HOSTS file is as outdated as it is.

I don’t use any hosts file tool and my Hosts file is still in its virginal state. It has never been modified by any malware either.

yeah, as said, I’ve only used it on my last PC a few years ago, never again since then, and I never had issues. Some people make it read only, you can also have it watched by a HIPS (CIS def+ can do that). Anyway I got hostsman running again now, can’t harm the system

I also don’t use a host file tool and it’s still the way it was installed by the system.

Same here.

I use to use BISS Hosts Manager but lost faith in that as it wasn’t really effective, and was last updated in Nov.

Thus far, HostsMan has stopped me from entering 4-5 different sites, so I definitely have more confidence in this.

The easy way to change the HOSTS-file

It can be rather complicated to make manual changes for every website. Fortunately a good usable HOSTS-file with a very extended and up-to-date list of unwanted addresses of websites can be downloaded from this website www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm (exacte downloadlocatie of mentioned HOSTS-file: www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt ). Open up the file using Notepad, copy the contents (CTRL-A followed by CTRL-C), paste this over the contents of the original HOSTS-file (CTRL-A followed by CTRL-V) and save the changed HOSTS-bestand under the same name (CTRL-S),

Thans all folks,

polonus

honestly NONE

Hi pinnacle,

You are in the best of company here, but I wanted to investigate what folks did - I just wanted to get a reaction of YoKenny, 'cause he is the expert here qua hostfiles, well on the other hand SpywareBlaster also has this built-in, I use that proggie. But in case of an infection/compromise you have to re-install SpywareBlaster…

Hey polonus , I misinterpreted your topic my apologies simply thought it was more of a what brand you use or if you do not use any type of thing sorry if i was wrong.

I use HostsMan, MVPS Hosts, and hp Hosts. Tested it and it works, except it blocked the Foxit Reader main site, and I have to click on HostsMan and run as administrator every time I log in.

Hi Brandon, unless I misunderstood your post…

You do not need to run HostsMan in order to be protected, the program is used to simply update, edit…etc.

Cheers!

I use a customized version of MVPS.

I’ve used Hosts Toggle http://www.snapfiles.com/get/hoststoggle.html for years. It’s simple toggle on and off, load file, edit file, and it doesn’t rearrange the file.
