I opened my avast today and there is a notification to update the application to version 20.1.2397 and I press update, after the update is finished there is a pop up to restart and I press restart, after that Windows restarts immediately. When restarting, “avast prevents windows from restarting” message appear, I don’t click “force shutdown” because I am afraid this will damage my avast, I just wait for couple of minutes and the message is gone and my PC begin restarting. After that I check my task manager and there “Avast Antivirus Emergency Update” running. What is this ? I really afraid if my Avast damage.
Hi, EMU checks for (emergency) updates after a reboot, that’s normal and nothing to worry about.
Glad to hear that. But to make sure, its there a way to check if avast running and protecting my PC ?
All avast process in task manager running

Testing whether Avast Antivirus protects your PC against malware

I would like to try this, but what happens if my avast can’t detect this and the virus infected my pc? Does this file contains real virus that can damage your pc or just a harmless test file ?

I would like to try this, but what happens if my avast can't detect this and the virus infected my pc? Does this file contains real virus that can damage your pc or just a harmless test file ?It is not a real malware file, just a text string that all AV vendors have added signature detection for. Eksplained in the wiki info
Also note that it will not trigger all funktions
This is what it looks like when uploaded to VT

I’ve tried both tests. Web shield working fine, the download site is blocked and Avast displays an alert.
But for File Shield, this is what happens. Before downloading the file I turned off the web shield for 10 minutes, after that I started downloading the eicar.com file, the file was successfully downloaded to my computer without interruption, but I didn’t run the file, I just waited to make sure avast automatically detected the file, but nothing detected, then I decided to manually scan the file by right clicking the file and “scan selected items for viruses”, then avast detects the file. Is this normal? Do I really have to scan the file manually or should avast detect it automatically when the file is downloaded to my computer?

This is not a executable file (on new 64bit OS) just a text string for testing some functions. As i said above EICAR test file will NOT trigger all AV functions
the .com is only exectutable on old MS-DOS systems. If you run it on a system where it could run, realtime detection would have detected it
If test dont work according to what described in avast support guide then you have to wait for somone at avast to reply. I dont use avast …
