What is Gen:Variant.Johnnie.14302?

A friend of mine is freaking out because this popped up while doing a scan on her computer and the thing has gone haywire trying to access her skype and all that jazz I am wondering what this is since any searching online leads to places that are not safe.

Hi esteelle7,

Welcome.

Seems as if this a browser hijacker affecting Edge, Internet Explorer, Firefox, and maybe Chrome.

I’d strongly suggest your friend come here for free expert help to fix: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=194892.0

Please run all suggested programs and attach logs produced in a new Virus & Worms topic created just for her/him.

This doesn’t appear to be an avast malware name and the actual name isn’t very user friendly. What AV are they using ?

The first part (Gen) indicates it is a Generic signature (this tries to detect many different ‘variants’ of a malware type), in this case Johnnie.14302 whatever the heck that might be (fake or real).

Whilst it might give a malware name, it really should also give the file name and or location of the detection, the malware name in itself is insufficient to determine what to do.

She doesn’t use avast she uses IObit I am trying to get her to switch tho. Thing is attempting to get into her skype account and things she is completely freaked out.
