What is this & how do I get rid of it?

Iv’e got an.EXE process running in Task Manager that has a randon 6 letter name. If try to end the process it just pops up again with a different random 6 letter name. I found the program in my system 32 folder but it refuses to be deleted - says it is being used by another application or process.
this is really frustrating as every so often the mouse pointer slows right down as if something is consuming a lot of resources. I’ve tried various antispyware apps & Avast home ed. but nothing seems to shift it. Dont really want to have to reformat & reinstall if I don’t have to. Just wondered if this was a “known” infection & if there was a “Known” method of removal.
Thanks for looking

  • What OS are you using? is it up to date?
  • What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number, e.g. 0436-4 (see about avast!)
  • What was the virus name, what was the filename, where was it found
    example (C:\windows\system32\infected-filename.xxx)?
  • What actions have you taken to try and resolve the problem?

Can’t say if this is a known infection, there is too little information to hazard a guess.
Which apps did you try - were they at least able to detect it?
Did avast detect it, if so what was it called?

If avast was able to detect it but not able to delete or move it try scheduling a boot-time scan from within avast (if you have XP or W2K).
