What is your favorite URL shortener?

Hi malware fighters,

McAfee came up with a new service, a URL shortener that scans the URLs according to the SiteAdvisor database (combined with some other McAfee products) to give users a secure shortened URL link to click:

Have a nice day. Lep dan :slight_smile:

Same here. A lot of places don’t allow shortened links.
If you insist on using one, the following is one of the oldest services:
http://tinyurl.com/

Hi folks,

Well great, I should listen to you bob3160 and DavidR, I refrain from URL shorteners.
Haven’t use gthen before, but was curious about your reactions and maybe we can delve a bit deeper in the security aspects of using them. There are some issues definitely.
Maybe also because of this: http://wepawet.iseclab.org/view.php?hash=bbb7acb6562f602ee470b59abe53c002&t=1285363586&type=js
Can anyone say if this could be suspicious on the McAfee service site:

Damien,
You might find the following interesting. It’s something I put together a while ago:
http://www.lockergnome.com/bob3160/2010/04/14/the-long-and-short-of-urls/

Hi bob3160,

Great job, added the bookmarklet to my GoogleChrome bar
And on the way found this for you: http://www.sitonomy.com/?url=

Nice browser that GoogleChrome if you know how to put the right bookmarklets and extensions in,

This is also a nice bookmarklet - Display Images:

javascript:Ai7Mg6P='';for (i7M1bQz=0;i7M1bQz<document.images.length;i7M1bQz++){Ai7Mg6P+='<img src='+document.images[i7M1bQz].src+'>
'};if(Ai7Mg6P!=''){document.write('<center>'+Ai7Mg6P+'</center>');void(document.close())}else{alert('No images!')}

Thanks again, bob,

Damian

+1 I just don’t trust the shortened ones. They’re only good for places like Twitter which I rarely visit as well.

http://tinyurl.com/ (when possible or needed).

That was one of my major concerns, you don’t really know where you might end up. Or you have to install some add-on to retrieve what the real URL is, which I think for the amount of times you are likely to use it, unwarranted.

I use bit.ly

My favourite URL Shortener is 'None.'
Its blocked for a good reason by hpHosts file: http://hosts-file.net/?s=tinyurl.com&x=33&y=8 <== • EXP - sites engaged in or alleged to be engaged in the exploitation of browser and OS vulnerabilities as well as the exploitation of gray-matter This classification is assigned to website's engaged in the use of browser, operating system and other such exploits, aswell as those engaged in exploits via social engineering.

Sites with this classification should NOT be loaded in a browser AT ALL.

This is why TinyURL and is.gd are good - they allow to see the real URL before going there. With is.gd, add a dash to the link so that something like http://is.gd/fsl1T would become http://is.gd/fsl1T- . With tinyURL, go to http://tinyurl.com/preview.php and enable it, then have fun.

is.gd : - :: bit.ly : +

A matter of choice.

I use it for Twitter in most case. And for other tasks, it all depends.
