what license?

I thought AVAST was a free home use program. I downloaded and installed it. For awhile, it was working fine. The little icon was down on lower right tray, etc.

Today, I noticed the little icon was not on my lower right tray. Went to Desktop icon to check it out and get the sudden screen I need my new license no. Did I miss something??? Don’t recall seeing any license no when putting it in.

So, what’s the fix? Go back and reinstall? Or, delete all AVAST files and download again?

For Avast Home Edition! :

go to http://www.avast.com/eng/home-registration.php
and register your email address for a new key (this must be done every 12 months).

then use the tutorial to enter the key in Avast:

http://www.avast.com/files/tutorials/insert_key.htm

There is no need to reinstall avast.

It is free you just need to register, you have just come to the end of the 60 day unrestricted use with the trial/demo key.

If adding (inserting) the new key does not work for you in the first time, I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the latest avast! version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

Interesting—

I went to do the license key install. AlWILL sent me the key. I tried plugging the key in the AVAST, and it doesn’t work for me.

So, I decided to try and uninstall software and re-download. Can’t find a file anywhere in my Windows XP software file to uninstall. Where is this thing? It’s in a folder in Program Files----do I have to take it all out of the folder???

Which is the error message?

You need to follow the steps… first Control Panel, then download the uninstall tool and run it.

For sure not ‘all’ the Program Files folder!!!
You need to point it to C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ folder.

Did you not look in the usual place to uninstall programs, windows add remove programs ?

Here’s where I’m looking for something to uninstall. The icon is on Desktop, but not in my lower right tray.

Not seeing the ALWILL files.

The icon on the desktop launches the Simple User Interface to do on-demand scans (normally used in safe mode to also start avast to do the on-demand scan.

Well from your image your installation didn’t completely install or it would be there, that would also account for the other problems.

So following Tech’s instructions start from step 3, download the uninstall utility (the Avast Uninstall in that step is a link to download it).

All is now well ! I downloaded and installed a new AVAST. Got the deal with license sorted out, too.

Thanks for the advice.

No problem, glad I could help and that the problem is resolved.

A belated welcome to the forums.
