what malware can hide the control panel in XP

Hi All,

This is similar to another thread I have ongoing but I fear that it will be lost down the list now. I have a client who’s computer has lost the ability to access control panel in all accounts. It is as if the local policy has changed! The user is not bright and had never updated his Avast defs ;-( but it is important that I know a specific malware strain that could cause this to happen as there have been other strange things happening on the PC involving pornography downloads to the cache. No spyware installed either ;-( XP SP2 and IE6 if thats any help. I also suspect that the trusted zones in IE had been changed to the minimum. Any help would be appreciated as I am going crazy over this one - J

It isn’t just similar but also related and the answer I gave to your other post (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=43797.msg366760#msg366760) there are many which modify system functionality, which wouldn’t help that much as you would need detailed information and it isn’t specific. That is why I have given general malware tools.

These two facts are, generally, incompatible.

XP SP2 and IE6 if thats any help

Should definitely consider downloading and installing Service Pack 3 and IE7 on this system. If they don’t have SP3, I’m sure that there are quite a few other updates that this computer is missing as well.

And I whole heartidly agree with Tech’s post:
