What? No auto updates for 18 days!?

I am using avast almost a year now. Everything was fine. Virus database was updated almost two times every day.

Yesterday I have noticed that windows red shield icon is saying that my av could be outdated… ?

Looked into avast about and found out that my VPS file was dated 02.03.2010.!
WTF??? :-X

How can this happen? No updates for 18days. Where can I reenable auto updates? Should I change my av software?

This is info after I have installed update manually today:

Information about current update:

avast 4.8 HE, build Sept2009 (4.8.1368)

Thanks

This is in fact the Avast 5 forum section… You are using 4.8 still.
Maybe it is advisable to upgrade to Avast 5 free.

@ Zyndstoff
It isn’t just for avast5 but for both supported avast versions, 4.8 and 5.0.

@ forumer9
From the avast Settings, Update (Basic), ensure that the VPS Updates are set to Auto, the Program Updates should be set to Ask.

Strange that your Windows Security Center didn’t give the Red shield warning earlier as it should when it is 7 days out of date.

Your OS is well out of date also as SP3 for XP has been out for over 18 months, though that shouldn’t cause any problem with avast updates.

Yes… sorry 'bout that. Got confused somehow.
::slight_smile:

Under Update (Basic) everything is as it should be… Auto and Ask

I’ve checked out logs and updates (under info) were regular until 2.3.2010…after that nothing…
no recent warnings…

Well if your firewall allows you to do a manual update it shouldn’t block the auto update, so we can rule out (up to a point) firewall blocking, but what firewall are you using ?

In checking out the setup.log that should report on how the auto update went, success or failure, if you could post the last (bottom) 200 lines of the setup.log.

Has your registration/subscription expired ?

If the registration had expired, then I doubt it would only effect auto updates and not manual updates.

This is part of log that is from today:

notice: I did manual update first thing avast started so this was not automatic update. In setup.log I can see two or more logs for every day…but nothing after 2.3.2010…18 days are missing (that was period when no updates were made). First new logs are from today and yesterday (manual updates).

Thank you for your time.

OK, that shows that the manual update from 100321-1 to 100322-0 went OK.

Now version 100323-0 has just been released, don’t do a manual update for the rest of today (until after your computer startup tomorrow) and see if the auto update at least checks for an update, so monitor the setup.log file.

Post the last sections of the .log again at the end of today.

i have the same problem with the new version. i downloaded the new free version of avast 05 but i didn’t hear the msg of the previous version" virus database has been updated" nor the avast is updated …i tried to uninstall avast but i couldn’t… it doesn’t work! could u plz help me?

I was few days out… returned this morning…
computer is runnung for 12 hrs now and no auto updates were made…

no change in setup.log

VPS file version is 100322-0

:frowning:

What to do?

It may not help but it will not hurt to try a repair of avast.

To do a repair of avast :

Control panel > Add/remove programs > click once on avast to select it > click on Change/Remove > scroll down the left pane and click on repair > click OK > follow directions

Nothing…
It just said: Software is updated now

It didn’t even updated virus definitions…

anyone?

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
  7. Check and post the results.
