What to do when virus is found

Hi what is the best thing to do when on access protection says a virus or trojan is trying to download to my computer?

Hi aff501

As some say here in the forum: “Do not panick!!”.
There is a sticky about this, you will find it here:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=14433.0

The sticky is information when you actually do have the virus.

If as you say access protection is alerting, that will prevent it from infecting, and if it cannot, it will certainly put the thingie into the chest, where it can do no further harm. The chest is a sort of virus prison or closed sandbox, where malware is rendered harmless.

To be prevented further, pre-scan all the links inside your browser for malicious nodes before you really decide to go there using Dr Web plug-in . It is a free service you can get from here:

If OK and green you can click a link freely, if red you are absolutely advised not to click that link.
Enjoy,
