What would that mean?

I have a free version of Avast! (v5.1.889) and Windows XP 32-bit. Today my PC froze twice and I had to restart it. Then I noticed there’s an additional folder in the Temp folder (avast). So, what is it?

Thank you!

The folder is always there when avast! is running - used e.g. for temporary files when unpacking archives.

I think that you mean the avast5 folder. I’ve had the avast5 folder for a long time and only today got that new one (avast).

I mentioned this in an earlier topic about the avast temp folder having changed from avast4 to avast5 on change of major avast version and asked if this shouldn’t be changed to avast6 (or simply avast). http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=70556.0

I believe it was Igor that said one of my suggestions would be a bit complex, but the avast temp would be one that might be doable (before avast 6 release), so it looks like it may have happened.

Yes, the name of the folder has changed recently.

Thanks Igor, one down ;D

Thank you both. But I have both folders in the Temp folder, avast and avast5. Is that OK?

You’re welcome,

I too have both in the 6.0.945 and 5.1.889, one or other for the time being will be redundant. In 6.0.945 the avast5 folder isn’t in use, in 5.1.889 the avast folder isn’t in use.

Hm, I only have the official non-beta 5.1.889 verison installed but I have both folders. And I think they are both in use since both contain files… Weird huh?

Actually, you are right, they are both used on avast! 5.1.
I changed it in the core libraries recently - but of course it cannot change the code of avast! 5.1 you have - that’s what uses the old folder. But the new code is already present inside of the recent virus definitions - which uses the new folder.
Once you update to avast! 6.0, the old one becomes obsolete.

Strange I don’t see both being in use, this is my primary system and it is using 5.1.899 and only the avast5 folder appears to be in use on mine.

Maybe the new folder is created only at the moment it’s really needed (when an archive is being unpacked there).

Well the avast folder exists as my lower part of the image shows, I just haven’t seen it populated with anything.

Anyway, it seems to be working fine so thank you for the explanation.
