I was on Majorgeeks forums a few days ago and I was reading a thread that suggested to use a download manager and having it run Avast for every file downloaded. Now I love Avast I really do I think it’s the best AV ever and when I saw this I was curious as I didn’t even know you could call Avast like that.
Downloads are fine I just want to try this idea. Whats a good download manager thats compatible with Firefox 3.5.2 and has a feature to “call” Avast when a file is done or started downloading?
I’ve been using Gigaget for years with out any problems.
You can get it from them or download it from MySharedFiles
The settings for ashquick will work with avast! 4.8 I don’t know what will happen in avast! 5
I use Free Download Manager and love it. http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/
I assumed Avast checked the download files for that manager as it is always revolving when I download a file. I have Avast 4.8 too.
I have tried many and settled on Orbit downloader, which works fine with firefox, avant and IE.
Much of it is down to personal preferences, so try them one at a time and see what suits you best.

Not all files are scanned on download only those considered a higher risk, e.g. .exe files, etc. zip files aren’t scanned by default by the standard shield, but the web shield should scan all files downloaded using the HTTP protocol on port 80.
So if there is an element of doubt as to if it may or may not have been scanned it is best to scan. That is where the download manager comes in ‘if’ it has a function to call the AV (ashQuick.exe) to scan the download when complete.
I use DownloadHelper extension in Firefox to download videos and images from many sites: https://addons.mozilla.org/nl/firefox/addon/3006
DownloadHelper is an extension to get content from the web. You can capture video- and imagefiles from various sites…
I don’t get it why ppl need download managers that “call” antivirus though executable. File System Shield and Web Shield are there for this task, completelly transparent without any need for configuration. FireDownload extension…
I agree with that. The only thing is that in the case of Avast 4, you never knew when the webshield or the standard shield scanned inside downloaded archives or not, in the free version. Since packers configuration is enabled in the new av5, it’s indeed completely unneeded to point a download manager to an AV. I actually already removed it in av4 a while ago since the day I downloaded a 4 GB Linux iso, and you can imagine what followed ;D
I just need it when avast 5 beta wasn’t updating, the virus database was old, it was not fully functional.
I use a download manager to increase download speed when I need, to keep a history, etc.
While using a download manager, WebShield is not the solution (as it cuts the traffic), so we schedule a full scanning after the download is finished. File Shield does not scan archives by default and increasing security decreases performance very significantly. I think you can use a download manager and a scanning after that to optimize the final set of the applications and the security.
