What's Happening?

I’ve tried a number of times to install Avast Free on my Windows 7 PC My current av licence (not Avast) is soon due for renewal and I thought I’d give Avast a try before buying.
I downloaded the installer, but every time I click on it all I get is a blue grey window with an irritating blue line that just moves from side to side for over 5 minutes. Nothing else. No progress information, no indication that anything is happening.
I close the window, after waiting an age for something to happen, by right clicking on the taskbar icon and that’s it. Nothing. No install!
I have a very fast PC, 32GB ram, SSD, Intel i7 cpu etc so it isn’t a case of low resources.
Can anyone tell me what on earth is happening?

You need to remove any (pre-)installed av completely before installing another.

It is completely and fully removed before I try to install Avast

Try the offline installer.

Don’t know where the offline installer is located.
However, after various different things, I succeeded in getting the installer to start by disabling Windows Firewall!
After that it was plain sailing.
A reboot and everything seems OK.
Windows Firewall is up and running and so is Avast.
