What's the difference between the Smart and Quick scans?

Typically, i run a Quick Scan, but am wondering what the difference is between it and the Smart Scan? Is one preferred over the other?

quick scan covers all areas activly running malware would use

Smart scan http://www.avast.com/en-eu/faq.php?article=AVKB89#idt_01

Avast Smart Scan integrates all on-demand scans into one (Antivirus, Software Updater, Home Network Security, GrimeFighter). One scan, different results and recommendations.

Thanks Pondus. Still unsure which would be the best to use on a regular basis?

Either one. Personally I run one quick scan each week and one full scan each month.
Having the resident shields reduces the need for frequent/daily scans.

With Smart Scan you can customize which areas to scan. >Settings>General>Smart Scan>Customize

With a resident on-access antivirus like avast, the need for frequent on-demand scans is much depreciated. For the most part the on-demand scan is going to be scanning files that would be otherwise be dormant or inert. If they were active files then the on-access file system shield would be scanning them before being created, modified, opened or executed.

I had avast set to do a scheduled weekly Quick scan, set at a time and day that I know the computer will be on. If for some reason my system wasn’t on, no big deal I will catch up on the next scheduled scan.

Now however I just don’t run on-demand scans and to hell with the Karma points ;D
