Whats wrong with avast?

At saturday i installed avast on two of my pc’s (XP pro and NT4). My first impression was good, but later i had to deactivate it completely on both machines!

There are many problems:

  1. The Filescanner crashed on the NT4 machine while scanning
  2. Internet Explorer (7 on XP, 5 on NT) hangs after a while. Sometime it helps to kill the process and start it again, but most time i had to reboot.
  3. On XP the Explorer itself hangs and Taskman could not be started (access violation!), so i had to hard reset the machine.
  4. Lotus Notes hangs and crashes

After deactivation, all problems was gone on both computers are working properly. Whats wrong with avast?

Prior to installing Avast what other Anti-virus program did you have on your systems? What method did you use to un-install them?

There are no prior anti virus installations on both machines.

Hi Michael,

I think it would be useful to focus on one single problem. Let’s use the XP machine for further analysis.

I’d suggest to simulate the problem once more (ideally invoke a problem that fully hangs the machine - i.e. normally, a reboot would be necessary) and generate a memory dump (which you’d then upload to our ftp site).
