When i start avast..........................

it says “storage canot be created for the “splash” task” then it cloes down and it wont work

Check out this thread for lots of options you can set through the avast.ini file. Understanding avast4.ini file

Check out the [Common] section and change the entry for Database=ODBC to Database=XML in your avast4.ini file and see if that cures the problem.

how do i get to the data base to change it?

You don’t have to access the database, it is in a file called avast4.ini in \program files\alwil software\avast4\data

And you can edit it with simplest NOTEPAD, WORDPAD, MS WORD or any other text editor.
