When will avast! release an update to fix the slowness bug?

I have been using avast! Free AV for a while on and off switching between it and NOD32.

It has always been so light you could barely even feel it’s there taking the edge over NOD32 for lightness yet still effective.

So I finally decided to buy a 2 year license to support avast! upon my recent format and installation of Windows 8.1 but to my surprise, my system became slow as a turtle and this is on a clean install. Launching programs and even opening new tabs in my browser (Pale Moon) was sluggish.

Then I read the myriad of issues regarding the same problem on these forums and came to know! oh great! what luck do I have! the moment I buy the AV it incorporates a serious bug in its latest version.

I request you to kindly forward my concern to avast! ASAP as I have just reformatted and don’t wish to install NOD32 but also don’t wanna install a buggy avast! which has problems with slowness + Dropbox upload problems

Since the release of 2014.9.0.2011 I’ve installed avast on many systems and different os’s and on none of them it was slow.
Let’s try to solve it for you.
Have you done (in this order?:

  • Install windows (formatted the drive)
  • Install ALL drivers
  • Install avast

If not, you haven’t installed windows correctly and should do it again.
If you did, try a repair of avast (control panel > programs > avast > add/remove > choose repair)

If that doesn’t solve it:

  1. Download Avastclear, Rejzors uninstall tool and the appropriate Avast program edition

Note : You need to be ONLINE during the install (sometimes online installer works whereas offline doesn’t)

Avastclear : http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
Rejzors Uninstall tool: http://rejzor.wordpress.com/avast-cleanup-tool/

  1. Uninstall Avast by control panel [If you don’t have Avast in control Panel go to #4]
  2. Uninstall in safe mode using Avastclear.
  3. Run Rejzors Uninstall Utility in Normal Mode (removes traces avastclear doesn’t) - reboot.
  4. Install the version you downloaded.
  5. Reboot.

Speaking of which it’s been awhile… since and product update.

Thanks a lot for this detailed answer! at least the people on these forums are not hostile, defensive, and actually willing to help

last time, I installed avast! before installing the drivers to be honest. I used the online installer and it just got stuck there doing nothing as I monitored my temp folder and the size was not increasing in the avast Temp folder although I’m on a 20 MB fibre optic connection. So I ended the setup by force and downloaded the full installer.

But concerning what you said, I am scared to try again because of all the negative posts on these forums regarding slow dropbox uploads and erratic system behavior, I have no hope of having any success with this version

what do you say? do you still want me to try or wait a while for a better version?

Update:

I did as you advised, that is, installed my drivers first, then used the online installer and now avast! is setup right and light as before

thank you so much

So, we are assuming this issue as “leftovers” from previous avast! version install, correct?

No, more like not all drivers where installed making the system not functioning as it should.

No, my first attempt was with no system drivers installed. And 2nd culprit could be I didn’t wait enough for the online installer to complete and ended it abruptly then I downloaded the full install for avast! AV Pro.

This was done on a freshly installed system so I guess it was the drivers causing this.

Another issue is also I noticed that after I installed Spyware Blaster 5.0 my browser (Pale Moon) became sluggish so this time I didn’t install it

Always good to hear a problem is solved.
Thank you for keeping us informed.

Trying to help someone who has a problem and is asking in a nice/polite way for help is the least I (and others) can do.

But if you wish us to be defensive/hostile, just ask us and we will be ;D
