Where avast installs virus definitions and itself?

Hi there,

I’m using a program called TimeFreeze which is similar to DeepFreeze program which reverts all changes on reboot.

I want to keep avast updates on reboot. I can exclude folders for the app.

Which folders should I exclude to keep the updates on reboot? So the computer will stay safe.

They are in the C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\defs sub-folder.

That said that is just one area of avast I wouldn’t touch, the other avast folders should probably be left alone, for a start the avast self-defence module is likely to complain about access to its folders.

Avast still has access to it’s directories but all changes on hdd are reset on reboot. So, it has to update itself on every reboot. Is there any other folder I should exclude to prevent folder reset. So avast can work in peace.

The problem is, changes to any avast files could well cause issues. VPS updates also include possible changes to the engines.

The Emergency Update Check could also update avast elements, bug, etc.

Essentially I would exclude all avast folders , there are also files in the system folder also.

I don’t use TimeFreeze, so I can’t speak from personal experience and as an Avast User not an Avast employee I can’t state every avast file and location.

I have DeepFreeze installed on several computers in our Senior Center.
I opted not to install any AV since keeping it updated was more trouble than it was worth.
Considering that the system reboots to a clean state with each new boot, I felt security was up to each user
and the security already part of the OS was sufficient. (Personal choice.)

set the updates to manual and thaw the pc once a week for the updates.

im using deepfreeze on all the units in my internet cafe. Base in my experience,
you still need a reliable AV. Its not like your pc becomes malware proof,
you could still get malware attacks from the web. There is no damage done on the system itself
however exempted folders can still be compromised and your email login credentials too.
Also in windows 10 youll get frequent unstoppable updates EVEN in metered connection(for critical updates) and
youll be force to restart.

The computer on which I’ve installed DeepFreeze, have NO Exempt folders.
These computer were never set up to be treated as your home computers.
Having said that, these are your systems, it’s also your decision what else you want to add and maintain.
I installed DeepFreeze because I don’t have the time to constantly update these systems.
